Jeff Hiller Promoted to Series Regular for Widow's Bay Season 2
Jeff Hiller is moving up. The actor, who played a guest role in the first season of Apple TV's comedy series Widow's Bay, has been promoted to series regular for Season 2, according to Deadline Deadline.
A series regular contract means Hiller is now a core cast member, guaranteed work across the full season rather than appearing episode by episode. For an actor who spent years as a working improviser, it is a significant step.
On Widow's Bay, Hiller plays Dale, a Town Hall staffer working under Mayor Tom Loftis, played by Matthew Rhys. The show, created by Katie Dippold, is set on a haunted Massachusetts island and blends comedy with the supernatural. Dale became a fan favourite in Season 1, celebrated for the scream: "This place is a death trap! RUN!" Deadline.
The promotion comes on the heels of a strong run for Hiller. He won an Emmy the previous year for his supporting role as Joel in Somebody, Somewhere, and was also Emmy-nominated for his guest role as Larry in Pluribus, a Vince Gilligan drama about a mind-melding pandemic starring Rhea Seehorn Deadline.
The personal connection between Hiller and Dippold goes back roughly 25 years. The two met in an improv group, long before Dippold became known for screenwriting credits including The Heat and the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot Deadline.
Dippold serves as creator and showrunner on Widow's Bay and was in the Season 2 writers' room, though she had not yet revealed exact plans for the new season Deadline. Apple TV signed her to an overall deal, a contract that commits a writer-producer to develop projects exclusively for a platform Deadline.
Widow's Bay has been a standout for Apple TV since its April 29 premiere. The series received 19 Emmy nominations, making it the frontrunner among new shows that year Deadline. Apple TV renewed it for a second season in June 2026 Deadline.
The ensemble cast includes Stephen Root as local fisherman Wyck, Kate O'Flynn as Patricia, K Callan, Kingston Rumi Southwick and Kevin Carroll. Hiro Murai directs, with David Ferino serving as director, producer and editor. Executive producer Murai produces alongside Dippold through his banner Chum Films Deadline. Season 2 episodes were also scheduled to screen at AMC Theatres, bringing the streaming title to cinema audiences Deadline.
For Hiller, the promotion locks in a larger role on a show already carrying serious awards momentum. For Widow's Bay, it keeps a breakout character in the mix as the writers' room maps out where the haunted island goes next.
