Panic Bomber W arrives in Super Bomberman Collection — a 31-year-old puzzle game's first trip outside Japan

A Super Famicom puzzle game that never left Japan has finally made it to Western players. Konami added Panic Bomber W to the Super Bomberman Collection as a free update on August 20, 2026, bringing the total number of games in the compilation to eight (VGC).

Panic Bomber W is a competitive falling-block puzzle game — think Dr Mario or Puyo Puyo — where matching coloured blocks makes them vanish and sends bombs crashing onto your opponent's screen. It began life on the PC Engine, a Japanese console, in 1994 under the name Panic Bomber, and was ported to the Super Famicom the following year as Panic Bomber W. The Super Famicom version had never been officially released outside Japan until now.

The PC Engine original did make one brief Western appearance: it landed on the Wii U Virtual Console in Europe and North America in 2017. But the Super Famicom edition — the version now in the collection — stayed Japan-only for over three decades.

Super Bomberman Collection launched the same day it was announced, during a Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase in February 2026. It shipped with seven classic Bomberman titles spanning the 8-bit and 16-bit eras: the Famicom versions of Bomberman and Bomberman 2, plus all five entries in the Super Bomberman series. The collection is available on Switch 2, Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC (VGC).

Two of those Super Bomberman titles — Super Bomberman 4 and 5 — were also Japan-only originals, localised into English for the first time as part of this collection. So Panic Bomber W joins a compilation that has quietly become Konami's vehicle for giving Western fans their first official access to a string of titles that previously required importing or emulation.

For players who own the digital version, the Panic Bomber W update applies automatically. Those waiting on the physical release will find it included on the cart and disc as well — the free update will be patched into physical versions of the collection on Nintendo Switch 2 and PS5 (Nintendo Life). The physical edition was originally scheduled for September 25, 2026, though Konami has issued a notice of release delay.

For fans of puzzle games and Bomberman alike, this update adds a genuinely different flavour to the collection — a head-to-head puzzle rather than the grid-based bomb-laying action the series is known for. And for preservation-minded players, it means one more Japan-only title is officially available in English, playable on modern hardware without needing to track down a Super Famicom cartridge.
