William and Kate Arrive at Balmoral With Children as Harry and Meghan Prepare UK Return
The Prince and Princess of Wales have arrived at Balmoral with their three children, according to HELLO! magazine. Prince William and Kate began their summer visit on Thursday, accompanied by Prince George, 13, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, 8.
King Charles was formally welcomed to Balmoral Castle on Tuesday, ahead of the Waleses' arrival. The Aberdeenshire estate has served as the royal family's summer retreat for generations, and the Waleses traditionally spend part of each August there.
The timing has drawn attention because of a separate development: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are set to return to the UK, six years after stepping back from royal duties and relocating to the United States. Harry and Meghan will not return as working royals, and their status will remain unchanged, with no "half in, half out" arrangement. They plan to live in a non-royal residence outside London and have already enrolled their children in schools for the move, HELLO! magazine reported.
HELLO! royal editor Emily Nash said William and Kate are likely "not delighted" about the news of Harry's imminent return. Nash also said the Waleses were likely informed in advance, after King Charles was told on Sunday, giving them time to process the development.
Back in January, People magazine reported that William and Kate would be hundreds of miles from London, in Scotland, during Harry's UK return — a plan that now lines up with this week's Balmoral arrival.
Balmoral carries its own history for the brothers. William and Harry were at the estate in August 1997 when their mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, died in Paris. HELLO! magazine has described Balmoral as a protective shield for the boys in those days, a place away from the spotlight. The Waleses have returned regularly since, including a family stay in August 2019 when they flew back to Norfolk with their children at the end of the visit.
The last time William and Harry appeared together publicly with their wives was in September 2022, when the two couples reunited outside Windsor Castle to view tributes left for Queen Elizabeth II. That walkabout, arranged in the days after the Queen's death, was the most visible joint appearance the four had made since Harry and Meghan's departure from royal life.
There is no indication that Harry and Meghan's return will overlap with the Waleses' Balmoral stay. What the visit does confirm is the family's established summer pattern: the King in residence at Balmoral, the Waleses joining with their children, and the estate functioning much as it has for decades — a private Scottish break conducted behind gates rather than on the public schedule.
