The Court Circular, the official daily record of royal engagements, notes that the King arrived at Balmoral Castle on the morning of 18 August and was received by His Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire. That places Charles and Camilla already in residence when the Wales family joined them two days later.
The Sussexes' return, first reported by the BBC on 19 August, involves relocating later this month to a private, non-royal residence outside London. King Charles has made clear that Harry and Meghan will remain private citizens and non-working royals — a status they have held since stepping back from official duties in 2020. Their children, Archie and Lilibet, are now enrolled in British schools and will start classes in September.
How the news reached the family has its own detail. Prince William was informed of his brother's return before it became public, while King Charles only learned on Sunday, according to Royal Central. Charles last saw Harry in July, when the Sussex family was welcomed to Highgrove for afternoon tea.
The two brothers have not spoken for several years. The rupture followed a series of claims Harry made in televised interviews and in his 2022 memoir, Spare. Prince Harry is scheduled to return to London during the very week William and Kate are in Scotland at Balmoral, meaning the brothers will not cross paths, People magazine reported earlier this year.
