Gamescom 2026 has sold out its entire exhibition space for the first time in the event's history — all 233,000 gross square metres of it, roughly the size of 33 football fields — as the world's largest video game convention prepares to open in Cologne on 26 August 2026.

Over 350,000 guests are expected across the five-day show, which runs through 30 August, according to VGC VideoGamesChronicle. The venue, Koelnmesse, and game — the German Games Industry Association — confirmed that Gamescom will remain in Cologne as the leading event for computer and video games.

The festivities kick off a day early. Opening Night Live, the two-hour livestreamed showcase hosted by Geoff Keighley, is scheduled for Tuesday, 25 August 2026, with the pre-show starting at 7:30 p.m. CEST and the main programme at 8:00 p.m. It will be held in person at Koelnmesse in front of thousands of fans, featuring new game announcements, trailer and gameplay reveals, and talks with prominent guests.

Several titles have already been confirmed for the lineup. Gears of War: E-Day will appear during the show, as Keighley announced. Naoki Hamaguchi, director of Final Fantasy VII Revelation, will join live for the first update on the game since its reveal at Summer Game Fest. The Witcher 3 is getting a new expansion called Songs of the Past, with first details and footage set to be shown. Ananta, from NetEase, and Metro 2039 are also expected to appear, and Mewgenics will have its music performed live for the first time during the broadcast.

For context, Final Fantasy VII Revelation is the next entry in a multi-part remake of the 1997 role-playing classic. The Witcher 3, released in 2015 by CD Projekt Red, remains one of the best-selling role-playing games of all time. Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel in the long-running third-person shooter series.

Gamescom co-organiser Felix Falk described the full booking of the exhibition space as a good indicator that the games industry is preparing for new growth after tough years — a period marked by widespread studio layoffs, project cancellations and contraction across the sector. He also said the show aims to give indie developers exhibiting at Gamescom more global visibility and to tell the human stories behind the games.

What makes this year's sell-out notable is the timing. The industry has spent the past two years cutting headcount, shelving projects and weathering a post-pandemic downturn. A fully booked convention hall does not erase that, but it suggests publishers and developers are ready to invest again in the public-facing spectacle that drives pre-orders and player anticipation.

The final show of Gamescom 2026 takes place on Saturday, 29 August at 5:00 p.m. in the event arena and social stage in Hall 1, closing out a week that, for the first time, will fill every corner of the venue.
