Dave Bautista Cast as Kratos in Amazon's God of War Series After Ryan Hurst Injury Forces Recast

Dave Bautista will play Kratos in Amazon Prime Video's God of War series, stepping in after the originally cast Ryan Hurst tore his bicep on set and required surgery that would have pushed production into 2027. Variety reported the casting exclusively on 20 August 2026, confirming Bautista has signed on to lead the two-season order, which will film back-to-back.

Bautista replaces Hurst, who was announced as Kratos in January 2026 and was the face of the project through its first wave of publicity. Amazon MGM Studios' own press release confirmed Hurst's casting on 14 January, and Prime Video's official X account introduced him to fans the same day. By August, Hurst's on-set injury had derailed the timeline. Amazon and Sony, which co-produces the series, announced they would recast the role rather than wait for Hurst to recover.

The series adapts the two most recent God of War video games, following Kratos as he raises his ten-year-old son Atreus while battling gods of the Norse pantheon. Callum Vinson remains attached as Atreus. The wider cast is filled out with Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Olafur Darri Olafsson as Thor, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, and Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as the dwarf blacksmith brothers Brok and Sindri. All were confirmed in Variety's 20 August report.

Filming originally began in Vancouver in February. With Bautista now locked in, production is expected to resume in the coming weeks, and every scene featuring Hurst will be reshot with the new lead. Variety first reported Bautista was in talks on 3 August, a story Deadline corroborated the same day with its own reporting that filming was expected to begin in mid-August.

Ronald D. Moore serves as writer, executive producer, and showrunner under his Tall Ship Productions banner. Frederick E.O. Toye will direct the first two episodes. The executive producer roster includes Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis are co-executive producers.

The series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions. Bautista is represented by WME and Jackoway Austen Tyerman Variety.

For a production of this scale, a recast at this stage is a logistical jolt. Two seasons shooting back-to-back means the same lead must be available for a continuous block of filming, and an injury that pushes a restart to 2027 would have rippled through the entire schedule. Bautista's casting gets the machine moving again — every scene already shot with Hurst gets redone, and the crew of hundreds gets back to work.
