Dave Bautista is in negotiations to play Kratos in Amazon Prime Video's God of War series, stepping into a role vacated by Ryan Hurst after an on-set injury derailed production.

Variety and Deadline both reported the talks on 3 August 2026. Amazon and Sony Pictures Television, which co-produce the series, declined to comment.

Hurst was originally cast as the Norse-god-slaying Spartan in January 2026. Filming began in February in Vancouver on a two-season order — meaning the show was picked up straight through two seasons without a pilot — with the plan to shoot both back to back. Four months in, during late June, Hurst tore a bicep while performing a stunt. The injury required surgery and a long recovery, and production paused immediately.

Rather than wait until 2027 for Hurst to return, Amazon and Sony decided to recast. Deadline reports that prep for the new Kratos is expected to begin in mid-August, with cameras rolling again in mid-October in Vancouver.

Bautista brings a physical résumé that makes the compressed timeline feasible. He broke out as a star in WWE before transitioning to acting, played Drax across six films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and appeared in Denis Villeneuve's first two Dune films. He is already in Amazon's orbit: he has starred in the streaming films The Wrecking Crew, My Spy, and My Spy: The Eternal City, and is set to appear in Road House 2 and the Highlander remake for the studio. He had just finished shooting Highlander, which required him to bulk up, when the God of War talks began. His upcoming projects also include Alpha Gang, premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, and the animated film Ally.

The God of War series adapts the story of the two most recent entries in the PlayStation game franchise, in which Kratos raises his ten-year-old son, Atreus, while battling Norse gods. The logline describes the father and son embarking on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Callum Vinson remains attached to play Atreus. The cast includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Olafur Darri Olafsson as Thor, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Teresa Palmer as Sif, and Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as the dwarf blacksmiths Brok and Sindri.

Ronald D. Moore — the showrunner behind Outlander and Battlestar Galactica — serves as writer, executive producer, and showrunner under his Tall Ship Productions banner. Frederick E.O. Toye will direct the first two episodes. The series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.

Bautista's casting would mark only his second series regular role, after Season 2 of the Apple TV+ drama See. For fans of the games, it also signals a different visual take on Kratos, who had already been the subject of intense online discussion following a first-look image released in February. Before Bautista's name surfaced, ComicBook.com ran a fan poll on Hurst's replacement, with Christopher Judge — the voice actor who plays Kratos in the games — winning the vote. That vote, of course, reflects fan enthusiasm rather than a casting decision.

Bautista is represented by WME and Jackoway Austen Tyerman. Neither agency has commented publicly.
