Outer Banks Ends Where It Began: Hurricane, Gold, and a Son Named JJ
Netflix's Outer Banks has sailed into the sunset. The fifth and final season, created by Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke, wrapped the series the way it started — with a hurricane. Deadline
The finale brought the Pogues — the show's tight-knit crew of working-class friends from the barrier islands of North Carolina — full circle. Sarah (Madelyn Cline) married John B (Chase Stokes) wearing a version of her iconic white Midsummers dress from Season 1. The couple recited the same vows they had used for their impromptu wedding on the open seas back in Season 2. They also welcomed a son, naming him JJ after their late friend, who was meant to be the baby's godfather.
That friend, JJ, was killed in Season 4 by his own father, Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane), a man who had also murdered JJ's mother. Season 5 built much of its emotional weight around the aftermath. Kiara (Madison Bailey), still in mourning, went after Groff with a vengeance. She killed him on her second attempt, surviving a hurricane in the process by floating in the calm waters under the storm's eye — the second time she cheated death after Groff had earlier sent her to the bottom of the ocean.
The Pogues' final treasure hunt took them to Azerbaijan, searching for Blackbeard's Blue Crown, a mythical artefact said to hold the power of resurrection. Kiara, Groff, and a rich collector named Finch each chased it hoping to bring back someone they had lost. Kiara, holding the Crown, saw JJ beneath a meteor shower. It was only her memories of him.
The group also recovered the Royal Merchant gold — the treasure that launched the entire series — from the ocean floor after the boat carrying Groff and Kiara sank in the hurricane. With that money, they rebuilt their home island of Kildare so that both Kooks (the wealthy islanders) and Pogues could live there. Most Kooks left. Pope (Jonathan Daviss) and Cleo (Carlacia Grant) settled into Tannyhill, Pope's ancestral home. Topper, once the Pogues' chief antagonist, became a bartender.
Season 5 also delivered three proposals: two from Pope to Cleo and one from Rafe (Drew Starkey) to Sofia (Fiona Palomo).
Outer Banks had been a consistent hit for Netflix since its debut in 2020, when it topped the platform's English TV list with 154.97 million hours viewed in its first week. Season 4's first part debuted at #1 with 15.5 million views in October 2024, then held the top spot for a second week with 8.8 million views. Netflix renewed the series for its fifth and final season at a fan event called Poguelandia, held at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica on 2 November 2024. The streamer and the show's team also planned a fan farewell event called the 'Pogue Awards,' Deadline reported in July.
For fans who are not ready to leave the world behind, an Outer Banks prequel is in active development at Netflix. Set 20 years before the main series, it would focus on the parents' generation.
What makes this ending land is its circularity. The show opened with teenagers chasing gold through a hurricane on the Outer Banks. It closes with adults rebuilding those same islands from the proceeds — and naming the next generation after the friend who did not make it.
