Outer Banks Sails Into Its Final Season as Cast and Fans Say Goodbye

Netflix released the fifth and final season of Outer Banks on 20 August 2026, closing out a series that turned a cast of relative unknowns into globetrotting stars and drew crowds big enough to shut down city blocks during filming.

The 10-episode finale season dropped on a Thursday, picking up the story of the Pogues — the working-class group of friends at the show's centre — as they grapple with the death of their best friend, JJ, in the events of season four (Netflix Tudum). Chase Stokes, who plays ringleader John B, told The Hollywood Reporter that he and his castmates were ready for the show to end, even as he expressed gratitude for it (The Hollywood Reporter).

The farewell has been a week-long affair. Netflix held a "Pogue Awards" event on 15 August 2026 in Los Angeles, where the cast said an official goodbye to the series (Netflix Tudum). Three days later, the platform hosted "Pogues for Life: A Fan Farewell Event," moderated by Josh Horowitz and featuring Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey and other cast members (Netflix Tudum). Stokes, Drew Starkey and Jonathan Daviss also appeared on the TODAY show to discuss the ending (TODAY).

The road here was anything but ordinary. Outer Banks was one of the first Netflix productions to return to set during the COVID-19 pandemic, with cast members taking three tests a day to keep filming (The Hollywood Reporter). When restrictions lifted, Stokes said he had a "really hard time" adjusting to the fame that had been quietly building while the world was locked down.

The scale of that fame became physical during season two. The cast filmed in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, and roughly 3,000 fans turned up to watch, requiring police crowd control (The Hollywood Reporter).

Stokes, who previously lived in Florida, told The Palm Beach Post about his roots in the state before the final season premiered (The Palm Beach Post). In his Hollywood Reporter interview, he said he still feels "very pigeonholed" by his start in young adult television and that other actors from similar shows have reached out to him for advice on handling sudden fame — advice he said he was not in a position to give (The Hollywood Reporter).
