SEVENTEEN's Vernon Releases Solo Single 'I'll Be Back' as He Begins Military Service
SEVENTEEN member Vernon released his self-written solo single "I'll Be Back" on Thursday, August 20, 2026 — the same day he entered a South Korean military training centre to begin his mandatory service. The single dropped at 6:00 p.m. KST, hours after Vernon had already reported for duty, according to the Korea Herald Korea Herald.
Vernon wrote and composed the track himself. He first performed it, then unreleased, during his solo concert "2026 VERNON THE 8 [V8] LIVE" in July 2026, giving fans an early preview before the official release Billboard.
The timing was not coincidental. South Korea requires all able-bodied men to complete roughly 18 to 21 months of military service, and Vernon, born to a Korean mother and American father, is fulfilling that obligation as a social service worker — a designation assigned after completing basic military training. His expected discharge date is May 19, 2028 Billboard.
His label, PLEDIS Entertainment, issued a notice through SEVENTEEN's official Weverse community announcing the single, and also asked fans not to visit the training centre or any future workplace where Vernon serves. The label cited the privacy and safety of those serving alongside him Billboard.
SEVENTEEN, who debuted in 2015, have spent more than a decade as one of K-pop's most consistent chart acts. The group has logged six consecutive top 10 albums on the Billboard 200 — the main US album chart — through 2024. Their best-album compilation, "17 Is Right Here," reached No. 5 on that chart in May 2024 Billboard.
For fans, "I'll Be Back" works as both a parting gift and a promise. Vernon will not be releasing music or performing publicly for the duration of his service, which runs nearly two years. The title says it plainly, and the self-written credit means the message comes directly from him.
