Peter Berg's 'The Mosquito Bowl' Sets October Theatrical Run Before Netflix Premiere

Peter Berg's "The Mosquito Bowl" will open in US cinemas on 30 October before premiering on Netflix on 25 November, Variety revealed on 21 August 2026. The film will play in select AMC Theatres locations and additional cinemas across the country during its theatrical window — the gap between a film's cinema release and its streaming debut, which here runs 26 days. It is one of only a handful of Netflix–AMC partnerships and the first since "KPop Demon Hunters" Variety.
The film adapts the New York Times bestseller "The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II" by Pulitzer Prize winner Buzz Bissinger. It follows four of America's top college football stars who enlisted in the Marines after the attack on Pearl Harbor and played a celebrated game ahead of the invasion of Okinawa Variety.
Berg directs from a screenplay he wrote with Mark L. Smith. Berg's credits include "Lone Survivor" and "Deepwater Horizon," both drawn from real-world events. He also appears on screen as General Buckner. The project reunites him with Bissinger and the band Explosions in the Sky, composers on his "Friday Night Lights" — the 2004 film and subsequent television series that also grew from Bissinger's reporting on Texas high-school football Variety.
Nicholas Galitzine leads the cast as John McLaughry, with Bill Skarsgård as Bob Baumann, Ray Nicholson as Tony Butkovich and Tom Francis as David Schreiner. The supporting ensemble includes Broadway star Brent Comer in his on-screen debut, alongside Dominic Bogart, Jack Ingram, Ella Newton, Lola Bond, Stacy Clausen and Billy Smith. USO interludes in the film feature Blake Erickson as Bob Hope, Claudia Ware as Frances Langford, Steven Sammut as Jerry Colonna and broadcaster Pat McAfee as a drill instructor Variety; Variety.
Berg produces through his Film 44 banner alongside Brian Grazer of Imagine Entertainment and Alex Gayner. Executive producers are Ezra Emanuel, Buzz Bissinger and Jeb Brody. The creative team behind the camera includes cinematographer Jacques Jouffret, editors Jon Otazua and Garret Donnelly, casting director Rachel Tenner and nine-time Academy Award-nominated sound designer Wylie Stateman Variety.
"The Mosquito Bowl" is the first film under a renewed creative partnership between Berg's Film 44 and Netflix, announced in April 2025 Netflix Newsroom; Deadline. Netflix flagged the title in its 2026 slate for Australia and New Zealand, describing it as based on the true story of the four players, led by Galitzine and Skarsgård Netflix Newsroom.
The late-October cinema date positions the film in the awards-corridor window — the stretch of the calendar when distributors release titles they hope will stay in conversation through the Academy Award nominations. Netflix has used this pattern before with a limited theatrical run to meet eligibility rules, then a streaming premiere timed to keep the film visible to voters. A 30 October opening gives the film five weeks of cinema exposure before arriving on Netflix for the American Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
