New Translations Debut 'Modern Lovers,' a Synth-Pop Look Back at Pandemic Escapism

Nashville indie-rock band New Translations has debuted "Modern Lovers," a synth-pop track produced by Yves Rothman, as the first preview of their forthcoming album (Rolling Stone). The song arrived on 21 August 2026.

The band is led by frontperson Oliver Pierce, who co-wrote "Modern Lovers" with Isaac Bradley Middleton, according to the track's official credits. Philip Walker plays drums on the recording.

Pierce told Rolling Stone that "Modern Lovers" is about "the distance between who the band was then and who they are now," and about longing for the feeling that anything was possible. The song references the pandemic period, when Pierce and his circle of friends fantasised about escaping to Thailand — a daydream that never quite left, and now sits at the centre of a track that looks backward through a synth-pop lens.

Rothman, the producer, has previously worked with Blondshell, the Los Angeles-based songwriter whose 2023 self-titled debut drew wide attention in indie circles. His involvement signals a deliberate shift in texture for New Translations, whose 2025 debut album Vacation established them as a guitar-driven act rooted in Nashville's growing indie-rock scene rather than its country mainstream.

That scene has been making room for them. Earlier this summer, New Translations performed during a rock & roll takeover at CMA Fest — the annual Nashville festival better known for its country lineup — held at Jon Bon Jovi's downtown honky-tonk. The bill was headlined by Cage the Elephant, the Kentucky-formed rock band with multiple number-one entries on Billboard's Alternative Airplay chart.

The forthcoming album, whose title and release date have not yet been confirmed, will serve as the follow-up to Vacation. No tracklist or further singles have been announced.

Pierce has previously described the band's mission in broad terms. "Find the outsiders and create a community that celebrates the strange," he wrote on the band's Instagram in August 2025. The band's merchandise is available through its official shop at newtranslationsshop.com.

For a band that built its early identity on guitar-driven indie rock, "Modern Lovers" nudges the sound toward something glossier and more synthetic — without abandoning the anthemic instincts that landed them on a CMA Fest stage. The question now is how far that shift carries across a full album.
