Bartlett's 92 Anchors Northamptonshire Before Bad Light Halts Lancashire Reply at Old Trafford
George Bartlett fell eight runs short of a century on day two at Emirates Old Trafford, his 92 the backbone of Northamptonshire's 284 all out against Lancashire in the Rothesay County Championship Division Two.
Lancashire reached 68-2 in reply before bad light ended play seven overs early, leaving the hosts trailing by 216 runs with eight wickets in hand. The day belonged largely to the bowlers, with Lancashire's George Balderson claiming 4-70 and debutant Ben Walkden taking 3-33 from 13 tidy overs.
Northamptonshire had resumed overnight with Luke Procter and Nathan McSweeney at the crease. The pair added 26 in 50 minutes before the innings lurched — three wickets falling in 27 balls. Walkden, on his first appearance for Lancashire, trapped McSweeney lbw for 20 and then bowled Saif Zaib for three. Procter departed for 39 when his cover-drive off Tom Bailey skewed to Arav Shetty at point, leaving the visitors wobbling.
Bartlett and Lewis McManus steadied things with a counter-attacking stand of 91, reaching their fifty partnership off 72 balls. The rally took Northamptonshire to 225 before McManus was caught at slip by Marcus Harris off Balderson. Bartlett, who had notched his fourth fifty of the season along the way, pushed the total toward respectability with support from the lower order. James Sales contributed 19 before edging to Joe Moores after lunch. Liam Guthrie and Ben Sanderson then fell to Balderson and Bailey in successive overs after the resumption, and Bartlett himself was last man out — caught eight short of three figures after a last-wicket stand of 27 with Yuzi Chahal.
Lancashire's reply got off to a jittery start. Marcus Harris was dropped on eight by Bartlett at third slip off Liam Guthrie in the sixth over, a chance that let the Australian opener add 17 more. Harris and Keaton Jennings put on 45 for the first wicket before Harris was caught behind off Luke Procter for 25. Josh Bohannon followed without settling, lbw to Ben Sanderson for four. Jennings and Shetty saw Lancashire through to stumps at 68-2, with play called off early for poor light.
Lancashire collected three bowling bonus points to Northamptonshire's one on the day, reflecting the home side's tighter grip on proceedings. The match, scheduled for an 11am start each morning, resumes on day three with Lancashire still well adrift of Northamptonshire's first-innings total.
What gives this match its edge is the balance of it. Northamptonshire scraped together a competitive total without a single century — Bartlett's 92 the highest score and the only innings past fifty. Lancashire's attack shared the wickets around, with five bowlers combining to take all ten. The chase is still in its early stages, but the home side will want Jennings, unbeaten overnight, to build something substantial if they are to overhaul 284 and push for a result.
