Marvel Said No to Shaq: Shaquille O'Neal Reveals Avengers Rejection and His Next Moves
Shaquille O'Neal will not appear in Avengers: Doomsday or any other Avengers film, and the reason, according to the man himself, is that his face is simply too famous. In an interview published 21 August 2026, O'Neal told Variety that Marvel turned him down for an Avengers movie, saying executives consider him "too big" for action roles because audiences would recognise him as Shaq rather than the character he plays. O'Neal's word for it: his face is "too bigtime."
The former NBA centre has been chasing the Marvel gig for nearly a decade. He first publicly lobbied for a spot in an Avengers film during a 2018 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Variety reports. Eight years on, the answer from Marvel is a firm no.
O'Neal is no stranger to comic-book cinema. He portrayed a DC superhero in the 1997 film Steel, a role that cast him as the armour-clad hero John Henry Irons. The film was not a hit, but it gave O'Neal a taste of the genre — and the taste never left.
His screen calendar is filling up regardless. O'Neal appeared in a cameo in the 2026 film Scary Movie and is set to appear in Grown Ups 3, Variety confirms. He also told Variety he wants to make a movie with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson — so he can beat him up on screen.
Away from Hollywood, O'Neal is busy building something he hopes will land a different audience. He is the commissioner of Dunkman, a league he and TNT Sports describe as the world's first professional dunking competition, where contestants from around the world compete for a grand prize of $500,000. The league launched in partnership with Eli Lilly and Company, according to a press release dated 6 April 2026.
O'Neal promoted the venture in an August interview with CNBC Sport's Alex Sherman, CNBC reports. The league premiered on TNT on 21 July at 8 p.m. ET, with finals scheduled to air the night of 25 August, per Variety.
What stands out is the candour. Most public figures deflect when a studio passes on them. O'Neal names Marvel, names the reason, and moves on — to comedy cameos, a pro dunking league, and a hoped-on screen brawl with The Rock. The Avengers door is closed. Shaq is walking through others.
