Norris Wins Dutch Grand Prix After Verstappen Crashes Out on Lap One
Lando Norris won the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort on 23 August, converting pole position into victory in a race shaped by a first-lap crash, two standing starts, and a late strategic duel with Mercedes youngster Kimi Antonelli.
The race was red-flagged almost before it began. Home favourite Max Verstappen, starting in front of his Orange Army, lost control on the opening lap at the flat-out final corner. His inside wheels caught the wet painted line, the rear stepped out, and he hit the outside wall nose-first. Verstappen was unhurt, but the damage was enough to stop the race entirely. The 18-year-old Mercedes driver — who leads the championship — looked comfortable out front. He and Norris pitted together on lap 21, the routine tyre change that every car must make at least once in a dry race. The race turned in the second half. Norris steadily closed the gap to Antonelli, bringing it to within two seconds by the time the Mercedes driver made his second pit stop on lap 40. McLaren then waited seven more laps before bringing Norris in for his own final set of tyres — a calculated gamble that sent him back out 4.8 seconds behind Antonelli, but on fresher, faster rubber. Norris's pace on those fresh tyres was relentless. He carved into the gap, caught Antonelli, and swept around the outside of the banked Tarzan corner before braking late into the chicane to take a lead he would not surrender. A late virtual safety car — a speed restriction deployed to allow marshals to clear a hazard safely — gave McLaren another decision: pit or stay out. They kept Norris out while nearly everyone behind him, save for Russell, dived in for fresh tyres.
