Rent West End Revival Completes Casting as Alexa Lopez Steps In as Mimi
The new West End revival of Rent has completed its casting, with Alexa Lopez taking over the role of Mimi after Bella Brown withdrew with a vocal injury.
Brown, originally announced for the part, said in a social media post that she sustained the injury before rehearsals began and needs a few weeks of recovery. Lopez replaces her in the production, which opens at the Duke of York's Theatre on 26 September 2026 WhatsOnStage.
Gaten Matarazzo, best known to television audiences for Stranger Things, will make his West End debut as Mark Cohen. The full company also includes Travis Ross as Roger, Billy Nevers as Collins, Lazy Violet as Maureen, Danielle Fiamanya as Joanne, Jeevan Braich as Angel, and Joaquin Pedro Valdes as Benny.
The production is directed by Luke Sheppard and builds on his 2020–2021 revival at Manchester's Hope Mill Theatre, a small fringe venue that has become a frequent launchpad for musicals transferring into larger houses. The creative team features choreography by Tom Jackson Greaves, set design by David Woodhead, costume design by Gabriella Slade, lighting design by Howard Hudson, and sound design by Paul Gatehouse. Bill Sherman serves as musical supervisor, with Katy Richardson as musical director and associate musical supervisor.
Rent, set in New York's East Village and loosely adapted from Puccini's opera La Bohème, follows a group of artists and outsiders grappling with love, loss, and the Aids crisis in the early 1990s. The musical by Jonathan Larson opened Off-Broadway in 1996 and ran for twelve years.
Casting for the West End revival was handled by Pearson Casting in the UK and Jim Carnahan Casting in the US. The Duke of York's Theatre, owned by the Ambassador Theatre Group, is a 640-seat venue on St Martin's Lane. Its official Rent page still lists Bella Brown as Mimi as of 24 August and does not yet reflect the recast.
The theatre's booking terms state that the appearance of any artist at a given performance cannot be guaranteed, and that no refunds or exchanges will be offered on the basis of a performer's unavailability — standard language for West End productions, but worth noting for audiences booking specifically to see Matarazzo's debut.
For fans of the show, the Sheppard production has a proven track record from its Hope Mill run and subsequent tour. The move to the Duke of York's, a mid-sized West End house, gives the revival an intimate setting for a musical that has always thrived on proximity between performers and audience.
