Catriona Chandler to Play Louise Woodward in HBO True-Crime Limited Series, With Joanne Froggatt and Meghann Fahy Co-Starring
HBO has found its Louise Woodward. Catriona Chandler has been cast in the title role of The Trial of Louise Woodward, a limited series dramatising the 1997 case that gripped both sides of the Atlantic, Deadline reported on 24 August 2026.
The series retells the story of an 18-year-old British au pair accused of shaking to death a baby left in her care by her American host family. The case became a media sensation, splitting public opinion between the UK and the US.
Chandler is not the only name locked in. Joanne Froggatt will play Susan Woodward, Louise's mother. Meghann Fahy and Sagar Radia have been cast as Deborah and Sunil Eappen, the parents of the infant at the centre of the case, Matthew Eappen. All four castings were confirmed in Deadline's 24 August report.
Fahy's involvement was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter on 30 July 2026, when the project itself was announced as a straight-to-series order — meaning HBO commissioned a full series without first shooting a pilot episode.
Behind the camera, the creative team is set. Matthew Barry created the series and serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer — the showrunner being the person with final creative authority over a television production. Susanne Bier, whose directing credits include The Night Manager and The Undoing, will direct all episodes.
Production began in August 2026, according to Deadline. No air date has been announced.
The Woodward case needs little introduction for anyone who lived through it. In 1997, the teenager from Elton, Cheshire, was working as an au pair for the Eappen family in Massachusetts when nine-month-old Matthew died from head injuries. Woodward was convicted of second-degree murder, though the judge later reduced the conviction to involuntary manslaughter and sentenced her to time served, setting off a transatlantic debate about justice, class, and media frenzy.
For viewers, the series joins a long line of true-crime dramas that have become a fixture of premium television. HBO's involvement signals a significant budget and prestige treatment, and the creative pedigree of Bier and Barry gives the project established hands at both direction and story.
The cast brings a mix of familiar and rising talent. Froggatt is widely known for her role as Anna Bates in Downton Abbey. Fahy appeared in The White Lotus season two and The Bold Type. Radia's credits include Industry. Chandler, the newest name of the four, takes on the series' most demanding role.
