Michael Ian Black Returns to Stand-Up After a Decade With 'First Annual Retirement Special'
Michael Ian Black's first new comedy special in ten years lands across platforms on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. Comedy Dynamics is releasing First Annual Retirement Special, which Deadline reported exclusively on August 24 (Deadline).
The title is a joke, but the gap is real. Black's last special, Noted Expert, premiered on Epix in 2016. Before that came the Comedy Central special Very Famous and the album I Am a Wonderful Man. A decade is a long wait between sets for a comedian who has never really stopped working — but a decade is what it took.
Black uses the special to reflect on 27 years of marriage. His material, as reported by Deadline, ranges from choosing between intimacy and watching Better Call Saul, to caring for each other through sickness and health, to what he considers the vital importance of accent pillows. He also ventures further afield: snack and soda flavours, stretches living abroad in Rome and London, and a poker win against a man named Dave who was wearing a tie-dye "I Am Kenough" shirt.
The special runs approximately 59 minutes, according to listings on Vudu. It is available for digital purchase on Apple TV and Vudu. Super Nice Guys produces, and the special is directed by Charlie Fonville and Jack Vaughn, per its IMDb listing.
Comedy Dynamics CEO Brian Volk-Weiss said the company has worked with Black for over 15 years, according to Deadline. Comedy Dynamics is one of the most prolific stand-up distributors in the US, handling hundreds of specials across streaming and digital platforms — meaning the wide release is standard practice for the company rather than a one-off arrangement.
Black's career stretches well beyond stand-up. He is a founding member of the comedy troupes The State and Stella. His acting credits include the Wet Hot American Summer franchise, This Is 40, Burning Love, Reno 911!, TV Land's The Jim Gaffigan Show, and Comedy Central's Another Period. On the film side, he wrote and directed Wedding Daze, starring Jason Biggs and Isla Fisher, and co-wrote Run, Fatboy, Run, directed by David Schwimmer and starring Simon Pegg. He is represented by Artists First and Sharron Elkabas at MN2S.
