Mike Birbiglia Returns to Features with 'Old Friends New Friends' at Focus Features
Mike Birbiglia is returning to the director's chair for the first time in a decade. Focus Features has greenlit Old Friends New Friends, a comedy Birbiglia will direct from his own script, with production eyeing a fall start, according to Deadline.
The logline reads like a reunion story with a twist: a tight-knit group of college friends travels to a summer camp for an old friend's wedding, only to discover he has built a new life with new friends. The discovery forces the group to confront what they've lost — and whether growing up means growing apart.
Lucas Hedges, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Geraldine Viswanathan and Dylan Gelula are set to star. Birbiglia will produce alongside Jacob Jaffke and Joe Hartwick for Oddball Entertainment (Deadline).
The project's emergence explains a clue Birbiglia dropped earlier this month, when he cancelled a select set of stand-up dates alongside John Mulaney, citing a "dream project" coming to fruition. This is that project.
Birbiglia's filmmaking résumé is short but distinct. His 2012 debut Sleepwalk with Me won the Best of NEXT Audience Award in its world premiere at Sundance before distribution through IFC Films. His sophomore feature Don't Think Twice, an ensemble comedy about jealousy within a New York improv troupe, followed in 2016. Both films shared a sensibility: small casts, personal stakes, and the comedy of discomfort. Old Friends New Friends appears to extend that line — an ensemble, a tight setting, and the tension between people who once knew each other well.
For Focus Features, the greenlit adds a character-driven comedy to a slate that has historically balanced prestige drama with mid-budget crowd-pleasers. For Birbiglia, it marks the longest gap between features in his career — a full decade away from the camera spent touring, writing, and performing stand-up.
Hedges earned an Academy Award nomination for Manchester by the Sea and has since built a reputation across indie and studio projects. Viswanathan broke out in the comedy Blockers and recently starred in The Beanie Bubble. Schwarzenegger appeared in The Staircase and the upcoming Nobody Wants This. Gelula's credits include Something in the Dirt and a long run on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
Fall cameras, a festival-circuit favourite behind them, and a cast of names that travel — Old Friends New Friends is one to watch on the 2027 release calendar.
