Hideo Kojima Turns 63, Reflects on Mortality and 40 Years of Making Games
Hideo Kojima turned 63 on August 24, 2026, and used the occasion to reflect on a career spanning four decades — and on the time he has left.
In a social media post marking his birthday, the celebrated game designer said he is aware he will not live forever. The things he "has to do" and "wants to do" keep growing, Kojima wrote, while the time available to do them keeps shrinking (GameSpot). He thanked fans for their continued support.
The milestone carries extra weight. Kojima noted that 2026 marks his 40th anniversary in the games industry, having started his professional career in 1986. It is also the 10th anniversary of Kojima Productions, the independent studio he founded after departing Konami, the Japanese publisher where he built franchises like Metal Gear (GameSpot).
Despite receiving various offers to pursue other creative work, Kojima said he wants to remain focused on making games. He was previously approached about directing the film adaptation of Death Stranding, his 2019 post-apocalyptic delivery game, but chose to step aside and let Michael Sarnoski take the director's chair (GameSpot). Kojima also said that once he commits to something, he cannot simply put it down and walk away.
His current development slate reflects that refusal to slow down. Kojima Productions is working on Physint, described as an espionage-themed project, and OD, a horror game. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, the sequel to his 2019 title, is now available on PC according to the studio's official website.
Kojima's studio has been celebrating the anniversary year in style. On August 23, Kojima announced plans for the "KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS 10th Anniversary Exhibition" at Azabudai Hills Gallery in Tokyo, running from late October through the end of the year. The studio also updated its Ludens statue — the spacesuited figure that serves as the Kojima Productions mascot — to a special 10th anniversary version at the gallery entrance (Hideo Kojima on X).
Fans got a quieter birthday surprise too. Kojima Productions appeared to update a night-sky scene in Death Stranding 2 to honour its founder's birthday, and the studio highlighted the "Best Photos" from its year-long Photo Mode Campaign — a community feature that lets players compose and share in-game images (GameSpot).
For a designer whose studio motto runs "From Sapiens to Ludens" — a call to evolve from mere humans into playful creators — Kojima's birthday message lands as both a thank-you and a mission statement. He is 63, he knows the clock is ticking, and he has no intention of putting his current work down.
