Hideo Kojima says his Xbox horror project OD is progressing smoothly and on schedule.

The update came in a video played at the end of Xbox's Tokyo Game Show presentation, Video Games Chronicle reported on 17 September 2026.

OD is being made by Kojima Productions, with Xbox Game Studios listed as publisher on Xbox. The partnership between the studio and Xbox for the game was announced through Xbox Wire. In games credits, that split matters: Kojima Productions builds the game, while Xbox Game Studios handles publishing, from funding to release.

Xbox describes OD as a one-of-a-kind experience from the mind of Hideo Kojima. Kojima described it in his own terms as a completely new kind of game that tests the thresholds of fear. The name he used was OD-KNOCK.

Sophia Lillis is performing in OD. Hunter Schafer is performing in OD. Kojima named both actors in the video message.

Performance capture, where an actor's movement and facial expression are recorded to drive a digital character, had paused during the SAG strike. ADR, dialogue re-recorded in a studio after filming, had also paused. The action centred on performers, whose absence freezes any shoot that needs a face, a voice or a body.

Kojima said both types of recording resumed this year. Production is now proceeding on schedule. Filming stopped. Now it has restarted.

The tone was warm. Kojima thanked partners at Xbox for believing in our vision and walking this path toward the future alongside us. He said he visited the Xbox offices in Redmond earlier this year and spent time with Asha Sharma. He added that he recently met with Xbox's leadership team to discuss the future.

The message arrived in the studio's 10th year. Kojima Productions is marking the milestone with an exhibition organised as "BEYOND THE STRAND: The Odyssey of Creation and Endeavor". An exhibition of this kind gathers artwork, props and footage to trace how a studio works.

Kojima had said on 31 December 2025 that work in 2026 would include casting actors, scanning and performance capture shoots. That plan matters because Xbox has been reshaping its games business. IGN reported on 1 July 2026 that OD was set to survive Microsoft's reset, while other games faced cuts.

For fans, this means the wait continues with a firmer signal. The schedule holds, the cast is confirmed, and recording is moving again.
