Beto y Sus Canarios Frontman Edilberto Portillo Alive After Shooting Before Mexico Concert
Edilberto Portillo, founder and lead singer of the Tierra Caliente group Beto y Sus Canarios, is alive and receiving medical attention after being shot multiple times on Saturday outside a venue in Chicoloapan, Estado de México, his family confirmed on Monday.
In a press release shared on the band's official Facebook account on August 24, the family said Portillo — also known to fans as "Don Beto" — was the victim of an armed attack and was receiving medical care. No other members of the band were injured, the statement said (Billboard).
Portillo was scheduled to perform Saturday night at Rodeo Texcoco as part of "Los 4 Patrones de Tierra Caliente," an event whose lineup also included Los Player's de Tuzantla, Súper Banda Los Pajaritos and La Dinastía de Tuzantla. He was intercepted by armed men while stepping off the band's bus and shot at least five times, according to the Mexican news site nmas.com.mx (nmas.com.mx).
No authorities, the venue, or anyone from the group made statements about the shooting until Monday afternoon, and the event organisers did not address the incident, Billboard reported.
The family's confirmation came after a day of conflicting reports about Portillo's condition. El Financiero reported that his condition was serious following the attack. Infobae, citing information from August 23, reported that Portillo remained in intensive care in serious condition after receiving several gunshots (Infobae). The family's Monday statement did not specify his current medical status beyond confirming he was alive and under care.
Beto y Sus Canarios was founded in 1987 by Portillo and Gabino García in Huetamo, Michoacán. The group is part of the Tierra Caliente genre, a regional Mexican style named after the hotlands region spanning parts of Michoacán, Guerrero and the State of México. Portillo has led the band for nearly four decades.
The shooting occurred as the musician prepared to take the stage at a multi-act lineup celebrating Tierra Caliente music. The attack and the silence that followed — from local authorities, the venue, and the event's organisers — left fans waiting more than a full day for confirmation of whether Portillo had survived.
No arrests have been reported, and the identities of the attackers remain unknown.
