Camilo Séptimo Keyboardist Jonathan Meléndez Found Murdered Alongside Family Near Mexico City

Jonathan Meléndez, the 38-year-old keyboardist of the Latin indie-rock band Camilo Séptimo, was found murdered alongside his pregnant wife, their three-year-old daughter, and the family's nanny on Tuesday, 1 September 2026, at the family home in Atizapán de Zaragoza, a municipality in the State of Mexico near Mexico City. The family dog was also found dead at the scene. A six-year-old boy was found alive.

Meléndez's wife, Ana Paula, was 35 and four months pregnant. The nanny was named Aleyda Romero. Three of the victims were shot in the head and another was shot in the back, according to CNN reporting cited by Rolling Stone. Reuters, which first reported the story on 2 September, described the scene as a shooting at an upscale penthouse.

Mexico's secretary of public security, Omar García Harfuch, confirmed that authorities had arrested two men in connection with the killings. One suspect, identified as Diego Sebastián 'N', had worked with Meléndez and allegedly exploited that relationship of trust to gain access to the residence, according to Rolling Stone and Variety. The second suspect, identified as Gerardo 'N', is also alleged to have participated in the murders. The New York Post reported that the killings were allegedly carried out by Meléndez's business partner, though the specific nature of that business relationship has not been detailed.

The State of Mexico Prosecutor's Office released a statement noting that even the family pet had been found tied up, a detail reported by both Rolling Stone and Variety. El País described the shootings as execution-style.

Meléndez, whose full name was Jonathan Samuel Meléndez Ochoa and who was known by the nickname 'Honas', was a musician, composer, and producer. He cofounded Camilo Séptimo in 2013. The trio released its debut studio album, Óleos, in 2017, and its most recent album, Mapas II, in May 2026. The surviving members of the band confirmed Meléndez's identity.

The killings have drawn attention to the broader climate of violence in the State of Mexico, the country's most populous state, where organised crime and extortion have long affected residents across social classes. The fact that the victims were a young family, including a toddler and a pregnant woman, in what Reuters described as an upscale residence, has compounded public shock.

Authorities have not yet disclosed a suspected motive beyond the alleged involvement of someone known to the household. The investigation is ongoing.
