India's Airbound Raises $37M to Build Autonomous Drone Delivery Networks

Indian autonomous drone startup Airbound has raised $37 million in a Series A round led by Greenoaks, with participation from DoorDash, Lachy Groom, Lightspeed, and Humba Ventures. The round closed less than a year after the company's $8.65 million seed round in October 2025, bringing total funding to nearly $50 million for the three-year-old company founded in 2023 by CEO Naman Pushp. Airbound's current production drone, called TRT, weighs about 3.3 pounds and carries a payload of around 2.2 pounds. The next-generation version is expected to weigh about 6.6 pounds and carry up to 11 pounds of payload, a fivefold increase in capacity. Both aircraft use a tail-sitter design: the drone takes off and lands vertically in an upright posture, then pitches forward into horizontal wing-borne flight. Think of it as a drone that stands on its tail like a rocket at launch, then flips forward to fly like a conventional airplane once airborne. This approach combines the flexibility of vertical takeoff and landing (useful where there is no runway) with the efficiency of fixed-wing cruising (longer range and lower energy use per mile). The trade-off is that the transition from vertical to horizontal flight puts heavy demands on flight-control software, and there are no tilting rotors to mechanically ease that handoff.
The company has logged more than 13,000 autonomous flights across Bengaluru and Guntur in southern India. A subset of those, exceeding 1,000 flights, was conducted with hospital network Narayana Health, transporting diagnostic samples between facilities. On that route, Airbound covers roughly 2.5 miles in about seven minutes. The Narayana partnership is now expanding to include Narayana's newly opened Banashankari hospital in Bengaluru, which was designed without an on-site diagnostic lab or blood bank, making it structurally dependent on drone-delivered samples from other facilities.
Beyond healthcare, Airbound signed an agreement with the Andhra Pradesh state government targeting 10,000 flights per day for retail, e-commerce, and healthcare deliveries. Reaching that cadence will require between 250 and 1,000 aircraft, depending on route lengths. DoorDash's participation is more specific: a food-delivery and commerce platform backing a drone operator that aims to handle retail and e-commerce payloads. That is a strategic capital commitment, not a passive bet, and it aligns Airbound with a potential demand-side partner already operating dense last-mile networks in North America.
The tail-sitter approach Airbound has chosen is not unique in the autonomous drone space, but the company's deployment strategy stands apart. The Narayana Health use case, particularly the Banashankari hospital built without a lab, is an example of infrastructure being designed around drone delivery as a primary logistics channel rather than an add-on. When a hospital is architecturally planned without on-site diagnostics, drone transport is no longer a convenience layer; it is load-bearing infrastructure.
The 10,000-flights-per-day target in Andhra Pradesh is ambitious. Even at the lower bound of 250 aircraft, sustaining that tempo requires high aircraft utilization, reliable autonomous operations, regulatory cooperation, and maintenance cycles that keep the fleet airborne. Airbound has completed thousands of flights to date, but scaling from hundreds of daily operations to five figures involves orders-of-magnitude increases in fleet management, airspace coordination, and fault tolerance. The regulatory framework work with the Andhra Pradesh government is still in progress, and the agreement carries no guaranteed revenue.
India's drone regulatory environment has evolved considerably since the liberalized Drone Rules of 2021 replaced the earlier, more restrictive framework. Airbound's ability to operate autonomously across two states and partner directly with a hospital network suggests the operational permissions exist for beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) commercial flights in at least some corridors. The Andhra Pradesh agreement, if it leads to a functioning 10,000-flight network, would stand among the larger autonomous drone delivery deployments globally.
The capital efficiency is also part of the story. Nearly $50 million raised over three years for a hardware-plus-software company building autonomous aircraft, operating real delivery routes, and preparing to scale to a four-figure fleet is modest by the standards of the broader autonomous-vehicle sector. The next drone version's jump to 11 pounds of payload puts Airbound in a weight class suitable for a broader range of medical, retail, and e-commerce deliveries, moving beyond diagnostic samples toward parcels and larger medical items.
The involvement of Lightspeed, which led or participated in both rounds, alongside Lachy Groom's continued backing, indicates investor continuity from seed through Series A. The addition of Greenoaks and DoorDash at Series A broadens the base from early-stage venture capital to later-stage and strategic capital.
What Airbound is attempting, and what the funding enables, is the transition from piloted demonstration routes to a commercially operated autonomous delivery network. The 13,000 flights completed to date establish operational credibility. The Andhra Pradesh target of 10,000 daily flights, the expanded Narayana Health partnership, and the next-generation aircraft with substantially higher payload capacity together define the scope of what the $37 million is meant to finance.
The broader question is whether the regulatory framework, fleet reliability, and unit economics can converge fast enough to support that scale. The next 18 to 24 months will tell the story.
