Apple announced two new chip families on August 25, 2026: the M6, its first 2-nanometer processor, and the M5 Ultra, a four-die design the company calls its most powerful chip ever. The M6 debuts in a new Mac mini; the M5 Ultra ships in a new Mac Studio, available for pre-order immediately with general availability on September 22, 2026 (The Verge).

"Nanometer" refers to the manufacturing process used to print transistors on a chip. Smaller numbers mean more transistors fit in the same space, which generally means better performance and power efficiency. The M6 is built on a 2nm process and pairs a 12-core CPU with a 12-core GPU and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine (a dedicated chip for AI tasks). The CPU splits into 2 super cores, 4 performance cores, and 6 efficiency cores, each tier handling different workload intensities. Unified memory bandwidth reaches 170GB/s. Each of the 12 GPU cores contains a Neural Accelerator, a design Apple has carried into the M5 Max and M5 Ultra as well, where the accelerators handle faster matrix multiplication for AI workloads (Apple Newsroom).

Apple's performance figures compare the M6 against the M5 and the M1. Multithreaded CPU performance is up to 1.2x faster than M5 and up to 2.4x faster than M1. The 12-core GPU delivers nearly 30 percent higher peak compute for AI compared to M5, and more than 8x compared to M1. The Dual 16-core Neural Engine doubles peak on-device AI compute relative to previous generations (Apple Newsroom).

The M5 Ultra takes a different architectural path. Rather than a single monolithic die (one complete chip on a single piece of silicon), it is formed by merging two dual-die M5 Max chips into a quad-die architecture using Apple's next-generation UltraFusion interconnect, a first for the M-series. Think of it as stitching four smaller chips together so tightly that they behave as one. It scales to a 36-core CPU, an 80-core GPU, and 512GB of unified memory with 1.2TB/s of bandwidth, 50 percent higher than the M3 Ultra's 819GB/s. Graphics performance is up to 1.8x faster and CPU speed up to 1.3x faster than the M3 Ultra (Apple Newsroom).

The new Mac Studio is available with either the M5 Max or the M5 Ultra. The M5 Max configuration pairs an 18-core CPU, up to a 40-core GPU, and up to 128GB of unified memory. It delivers up to 3.9x faster AI performance than the prior generation, accelerating prompt processing. The M5 Ultra configuration achieves up to 4.3x the peak AI compute of the M3 Ultra and 9.8x more than the M1 Ultra. Across both configurations, the Mac Studio delivers up to 2x faster storage, up to 1.8x faster graphics, and up to 1.3x faster CPU speed compared with prior generations (Apple Newsroom).

Connectivity on the new Mac Studio includes Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, both firsts for the product line, plus Thunderbolt 5. Thunderbolt 5 enables multiple Mac Studio systems to be clustered, delivering up to 3x faster performance for distributed AI inference compared with a single system. The Mac Studio can drive up to four of Apple's 5K/120Hz Studio Display XDR monitors at full resolution. The chassis itself is unchanged from the design introduced in 2022 (The Verge).

Pricing positions the M5 Max Mac Studio at $2,499 with 36GB of unified memory and 512GB of storage. The M5 Ultra configuration starts at $5,499 with 96GB of memory and 1TB of storage. For context, the M3 Ultra Mac Studio launched at $3,999 the previous year, and the M4 Max Mac Studio received a $500 price hike in June 2026, bringing its starting price to $2,499. The highest-end M5 Ultra configuration with 512GB of memory will ship in late October 2026, with pricing not yet announced (The Verge).

Apple has discontinued its Mac Pro line, making the Mac Studio its most powerful computer. Johny Srouji, Apple's chief hardware officer, stated that the M5 Max and M5 Ultra make the new Mac Studio Apple's most powerful Mac ever. Sri Santhanam, vice president of Silicon Engineering Group, also commented on the launch. The Mac Studio works with Studio Display and Studio Display XDR, runs macOS 27 Golden Gate, and supports the next generation of Apple Intelligence including Siri AI (Apple Newsroom).

Macworld had previously reported that the Mac Studio M5 was expected in October 2026, delayed from an early 2026 timeline due to global RAM shortages affecting AI infrastructure. Apple ultimately moved the launch forward to August (Macworld).

The broader context here is that Apple is now shipping two distinct silicon tracks simultaneously. The M6, at 2nm, pushes the leading edge of manufacturing process advancement in a consumer chip. The M5 Ultra achieves its performance through package-level integration, stitching four dies together via UltraFusion rather than waiting for a smaller process node to unify the design. That dual-track approach lets Apple advance manufacturing in its volume chip while scaling the high end through interconnect density.

The AI positioning is also explicit. Neural Accelerators embedded in every GPU core, the doubling of Neural Engine compute on M6, and the Thunderbolt 5 clustering capability on Mac Studio all target on-device and distributed inference workloads. With the Mac Pro discontinued, Apple has consolidated its desktop performance tier into the Mac Studio form factor. The 512GB unified memory ceiling on the M5 Ultra, paired with 1.2TB/s bandwidth, puts the top configuration in territory that competes with workstation-class discrete GPU setups for large-model inference, while maintaining the unified memory architecture that eliminates the data-transfer overhead between CPU and GPU memory pools that traditional designs face.

One detail worth tracking: pricing for the 512GB M5 Ultra configuration remains unannounced, and that SKU does not ship until late October 2026. The configurations that matter most for large-model inference workloads are precisely the ones with the longest wait and the least certain cost.
