Ashley Cole Steps Down as England Under-21 Coach After Five-Year Spell
Ashley Cole has left his role as England Under-21 coach after five years on the staff, stepping away from a position he held through two consecutive European Under-21 title triumphs (BBC Sport).
Cole, 45, was part of Lee Carsley's coaching team as England's young Lions won back-to-back European Under-21 Championships — the continent's top tournament for players under 21. He had worked with the age group since 2021, combining national-team duties with a steadily growing coaching CV built across English football and, briefly, Italy.
A playing career that brought 107 England caps does not need much introduction. Cole won three Premier League titles, the Champions League, the Europa League, seven FA Cups and one League Cup across spells with Arsenal and Chelsea. He retired in 2019 and moved quickly into the dugout.
His coaching education began at Derby County, where he completed his badges under Frank Lampard — his former Chelsea teammate. From there he spent time in Chelsea's academy before branching out as an assistant at Everton, Birmingham City under Wayne Rooney, and with the England senior side during Carsley's brief stint as interim manager in 2024 (BBC Sport).
The most unusual chapter came in March of this year. Cole took over as head coach of Cesena, a club in Serie B — Italy's second tier — on a contract through June 2026 with an option for extension (ESPN). He had spoken openly about feeling "discouraged" within the English football pyramid, sensing that opportunities to manage at a senior level were not forthcoming at home. Italy offered a fresh start.
It lasted three months. Cole left Cesena in June after discussions with the club's sporting director about what was described as a "change in the club's strategy" (BBC Sport). A brief spell, but a bold one — few English coaches at any level have taken the leap into Italian football's lower leagues.
What stands out across Cole's five years with the Under-21s is the consistency of the success. Back-to-back European titles at any level is rare. That Cole helped deliver them while still learning the craft himself, moving between assistant roles and a short-lived head-coaching job abroad, speaks to a coach gathering experience wherever he could find it.
Where he turns next is not yet known. But a man with 107 caps, a wall of medals and a taste of management on the continent now has a coaching résumé to match.
