Andrew Flintoff has stepped down as head coach of England Lions, the team that serves as the stepping stone between county cricket and the full England side. The 48-year-old had been in charge since September 2024. BBC Sport

Flintoff thanked England managing director Rob Key for trusting him with the role in his leaving statement. The England and Wales Cricket Board said he had been "central to establishing a world-class Lions environment" with a significant impact on the development of the next generation of players and coaches. Flintoff's coaching career has moved quickly. Before the Lions appointment, he helped coach England's white-ball sides informally after leaving his presenter role on the television programme Top Gear. He then spent two seasons as head coach of the Northern Superchargers men's team in The Hundred, the ECB's 100-ball competition, guiding the side to fourth and then third-placed finishes.

He was not retained by Northern Superchargers for 2026 after the franchise was taken over by the owners of the Sunrisers group. In June 2025, Flintoff was named head coach of Sydney Thunder in Australia's Big Bash League. He had initially planned to continue in the Lions role while leaving a tour of South Africa early to join the Thunder, but has now vacated the position entirely. BBC Sport

His final assignment with the Lions was South Africa A's tour of England in May and June. The Lions lost both four-day matches and two of three 50-over games on that tour. BBC Sport

The Lions programme continues without him. Mike Yardy will step in as head coach for the four-day match between a Professional County Club Select XI and Pakistan, which begins at Beckenham on Wednesday, 12 August. That fixture serves as Pakistan's warm-up before their Test series against England.
