Shonda Rhimes Renews Netflix Deal for Five More Years

Shonda Rhimes is staying at Netflix for another five years. The renewed overall deal — an arrangement where a creator develops all their projects exclusively for one platform — covers Rhimes, her production company Shondaland, and long-time producing partner Betsy Beers, who will continue to develop and produce series, films and games for the streaming service. The pact also includes merchandise and live events tied to Shondaland projects. Deadline
The new agreement arrives five years after Rhimes first signed with Netflix in 2021, a deal that was later expanded to add feature films, gaming and virtual reality content to the original television-focused arrangement. Variety
The numbers behind the renewal are substantial. Netflix said the Bridgerton franchise has recorded 610 million views since the first half of 2023. The first season of Bridgerton ranks as the seventh most popular show ever on the platform, and season three sits at number ten. The prequel spinoff Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story entered Netflix's all-time top ten when it launched in 2023. Deadline
Bridgerton is not the only Shondaland output at Netflix. Rhimes has also produced the limited series Inventing Anna, the one-season murder mystery The Residence, the Emmy-winning documentary Black Barbie, and Dance Dreams: Hot Chocolate Nutcracker, a documentary about choreographer Debbie Allen. Season five of Bridgerton is currently in production in London at a studio complex Netflix built for Rhimes, and will focus on Francesca Bridgerton and Michaela Stirling. Deadline
Beyond scripted television, the expanded Shondaland-Netflix partnership now adds live events and experiences to an existing branding and merchandise deal for Shondaland Media content. Netflix will also continue supporting Shondaland's inclusion initiatives, including the Ladder Program, which trains underrepresented below-the-line creatives — the crew members who work in roles like camera, lighting and set design rather than in above-the-line creative leadership. Deadline
Rhimes is not the only top-tier showrunner whose loyalty has been courted in recent years. Stranger Things creators the Duffer Brothers signed a megadeal with Paramount in 2025. Ryan Murphy, creator of Dahmer: Monster — The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, moved back to Disney in 2023 after his own period at Netflix. The streaming wars that once saw platforms hand out massive overall deals to marquee producers have cooled, but Rhimes' renewal shows Netflix is willing to commit long-term to the creators whose shows consistently land in the all-time rankings.
For fans of Bridgerton and Shondaland's other series, the message is straightforward: the pipeline is not closing. Five more years of exclusive development means new seasons, new projects and new formats are all on the table — and a writers' room and a crew of hundreds now have the security of knowing their next order could come.
