Netflix Ends Sweet Magnolias After Five Seasons

Netflix has cancelled Sweet Magnolias after five seasons.

The romance series was created by Sheryl J. Anderson and based on the books by Sherryl Woods. Deadline reported the end of the run on 20 September 2026. Anderson also served as executive producer and showrunner, the day-to-day creative lead in charge of the series.

The final chapter, Season 5, ran to 10 episodes. Netflix listed the season as premiering on 11 June, according to its Tudum companion site. Tudum

That season starred JoAnna Garcia Swisher alongside Heather Headley as Helen and Brooke Elliott as Dana Sue. The show is described as a romance series. EW

Anderson marked the ending with a farewell statement on Instagram. She thanked fans for their passion for the show's characters. “Though our journey has sadly come to an end, I hope Serenity will always have a place in your heart,” she wrote, in a statement reported by Variety. She closed with the line “Keep pouring it out!”

She added that “Serenity will always be happy to see you” and that “Sweet Magnolias will always be there for you when you need them most,” as reported by Us Weekly. The messages keep the focus on the viewers who followed the characters across five seasons.

The parting is not a full break. Netflix has greenlit, meaning given a firm order to produce, a new series from Anderson and Swisher. The project is loosely based on Lauren Edmondson's novel Ladies of the House and centres on a trio of women. Swisher is attached as an executive producer, a senior role overseeing creative and business decisions, and is being eyed to star, meaning producers want her for a leading role.

For fans, this means one story ends and another begins. Five seasons remain available to revisit. A new trio-led story from the same creator and star is now in the pipeline.
