Lauren London Joins Universal's Snoop Dogg Biopic as His Mother Beverly Tate
Lauren London will portray Beverly Tate, Snoop Dogg's mother, in Universal Pictures' upcoming biopic Snoop, Deadline reported on 25 August 2026. Tate, also known as Beverly Broadus-Green, was a church choir director who profoundly shaped her son Calvin Broadus — including inspiring the nickname "Snoop."
The casting adds a personal anchor to a film that is steadily filling out its ensemble. Jonathan Daviss will play Snoop Dogg himself, while Myles Bullock takes on the role of Dr. Dre. Craig Brewer is set to direct, working from his rewrite of Joe Robert Cole's original script. Universal has dated the film for release on 6 August 2027.
Behind the camera, the producing team spans three companies. Snoop Dogg produces alongside Sara Ramaker, president of Death Row Pictures — the label Snoop owns and has built into a film production arm. Brian Grazer and Allan Mandelbaum produce for Imagine Entertainment. Michael Beugg and Jeb Brody serve as executive producers. Universal's Ryan Jones, Senior Vice President of Production Development, and Tony Ducret, Director of Development, are overseeing the project for the studio.
The biopic carries an added layer of significance for the business: it is the first project under Death Row Pictures' overall deal with NBCUniversal Entertainment, the parent umbrella that includes Universal Pictures. That deal gives Snoop's company a pipeline into one of Hollywood's major studios, and Snoop is the opening test of the arrangement.
London and Snoop Dogg have a working history that stretches back to the early 2000s, when she appeared in several of his music videos. She has since built a screen career spanning film and television, including the Without Remorse adaptation and the BET drama Games People Play. Daviss is best known for his role as Pope in Netflix's Outer Banks.
Snoop Dogg's life has reached screens before. In 2017, he debuted COALAID: The Movie, an autobiographical project chronicling pivotal moments in his career, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The Universal biopic, though, is the first full studio-level treatment of his story — with a theatrical release, a known director, and the artist himself producing.
What gives the casting of London its weight is the role itself. Beverly Tate was not a footnote in Snoop Dogg's origin story; she was the choir director who surrounded him with music from childhood and gave him the name that would become global. Giving her a central place in the film signals where the story plans to start.
