Exodus, the sci-fi RPG from former Mass Effect developers, targets early 2027 launch
Archetype Entertainment has narrowed down a release window for its sci-fi role-playing game Exodus: early 2027. The news landed during the Gamescom Opening Night Live show on 25 August 2026, revealed at the close of a new trailer spotlighting one of the game's companion characters Eurogamer.
That companion is Salt, an octopus described as "awakened" — meaning sentient within the game's fiction — who pilots a mech suit. The trailer showcased Salt before closing with the release window, confirming what the game's official website and a December 2025 trailer had already stated Eurogamer.
Exodus is in development at Archetype Entertainment, a studio under Wizards of the Coast — the Hasbro-owned publisher best known for Dungeons & Dragons. The team includes former BioWare developers, among them Drew Karpyshyn, lead writer on the original Mass Effect. That lineage matters because Exodus is a story-driven, single-player sci-fi RPG in the tradition BioWare built with Mass Effect and the earlier Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, where player choices reshape the narrative across tens of hours of play.
The game was first announced in December 2023 via a press release on Business Wire Business Wire. A follow-up trailer, titled "A Hero Rises," arrived in December 2025 and carried the same early 2027 window shown at Gamescom Business Wire.
One of Exodus's distinguishing features is its time dilation mechanic. Players will see the long-term consequences of their decisions unfold across years or decades within the game's fiction. Special "exodus" missions — long-distance journeys travelled near the speed of light — amplify this: characters who depart and return find the world aged and changed in their absence, with the ripples of earlier choices visible in what they come back to Eurogamer.
When it launches, Exodus will be available on PC through both Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S Eurogamer. No specific date within the early 2027 window has been given.
For players who have waited for a major single-player sci-fi RPG in the BioWare mould, the Gamescom showing offered the clearest signal yet that the project is real, staffed, and on a calendar. The early 2027 window puts it roughly a year and a half out from this week's reveal — close enough to track, far enough that the date could still shift as development continues.
