The Witcher 3 Remaster Arrives 29 September as a Free Upgrade, With a New Expansion Coming in 2027

CD Projekt Red will release a remaster of The Witcher 3 on 29 September as a free upgrade for everyone who already owns the game, the studio announced during Gamescom's Opening Night Live showcase on 25 August (Eurogamer).

The same showcase closed with a debut trailer for "Songs of the Past," a new expansion starring Geralt. First announced in May, the add-on is co-developed by external studio Fool's Theory and is slated for release in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (CD Projekt Red).

For context, The Witcher 3 originally launched in 2015. Its two existing expansions — Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine — arrived within roughly a year of release, each offering a substantial standalone story. "Songs of the Past" is described as equivalent in size to those earlier expansions, meaning it will be a sizable addition rather than a small piece of downloadable content.

The remaster, meanwhile, reworks several core systems. Players can expect enhanced combat, improved traversal and movement, and monster behaviours that have been overhauled to feel less predictable. The skill tree has been revamped, transmog — a system that lets you change the appearance of gear without altering its stats — is being added, and new finisher animations round out the package.

A prior update to The Witcher 3, the next-gen version labelled 4.0, introduced cross-progression: the ability to carry save files between platforms. The remaster builds on that foundation, though CD Projekt Red has not yet detailed whether further platform-specific features are planned.

The broader Witcher roadmap is busy. The Witcher 4 is in full production and targeting a 2028 release, according to Eurogamer. So while the remaster gives returning players a reason to revisit the 2015 original this autumn, the expansion and the sequel ensure Geralt's world stays active for years to come.

For fans, the free-upgrade model is the standout detail. Anyone who bought The Witcher 3 at any point — on any platform they still own it — gets the remastered version at no additional cost. New players will simply buy the game as it ships in its updated form. The expansion, being a separate product, will carry its own price, which has not yet been announced.
