The Witcher 3's New Expansion Sends Geralt to Romance and Rural Mystery in 2027
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is getting a new expansion called Songs of the Past, and it is bringing Geralt of Rivia back for a fresh adventure — roughly 11 years after the original game's release. Publisher CD Projekt Red announced the expansion on 27 May 2026 (Game Informer), with a full reveal trailer shown at Gamescom on 25 August 2026 (IGN on Facebook). It is slated to launch in 2027.
The expansion is set in Letten, a rural country in the north of the continent. Dandelion — the bard and Geralt's longtime travelling companion — returns to his ancestral home there for family business, and Geralt goes along. Joining them is Lilla, Dandelion's cousin, described as a fiery woman with a sense of adventure whom Geralt takes a shine to (Eurogamer).
A hands-off gameplay demo at Gamescom showed Geralt accompanying Lilla on a scouting mission to a mysterious grove cursed with sentient thorns. During the demo, the game presented a dialogue choice to hug Lilla after she fell — something the attending reporter described as a possible romance option. Miles Tost, level design lead at CD Projekt Red, joked during the presentation: "Come on, I'm Team Yen" — a reference to Yennefer, Geralt's established love interest across the series.
Fool's Theory, the studio developing the expansion, is keeping quiet on the romance question. CEO Jakub Rokosz declined to confirm whether Lilla is a romance option, saying the studio wants players to experience it for themselves. Carolin Wendt, CD Projekt Red's "expert content creator strategist," was less coy on a livestream, telling viewers there is "more romance for Geralt" in the expansion.
For fans, that tease carries real weight. Romance options have been a signature feature of The Witcher series since the first game, and who Geralt ends up with has been a subject of passionate debate among players for over a decade. The possibility of a new love interest — set against a story that was written years before its 2027 release — adds an unexpected thread to a game many assumed had closed its final chapter.
Songs of the Past will be available on PC and Xbox Series X|S (CD Projekt Red forums), launching on GOG, Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Battle.net (YouTube). Notably absent from the announced platforms: PlayStation.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt first released in 2015 and went on to become one of the most widely played role-playing games of its generation, with its two earlier expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, released in 2015 and 2016 respectively. A new expansion arriving more than a decade later is, by any measure, an unusual move — and one that gives players a reason to return to a world many had considered finished.
