Paradox Reveals Afterworld, a Post-Apocalyptic Grand Strategy Built on Scavenging and Ruin

Paradox Interactive has unveiled Afterworld, its first grand strategy game set in an original world in over a decade. The reveal landed on 25 August 2026, one day after leaks surfaced ahead of Gamescom. The game is headed to Steam, with co-op and competitive multiplayer confirmed (Eurogamer).
Afterworld drops players into a post-apocalyptic North America. The terrain is hazardous, old-world ruins are dangerous, and only remnants of humanity survive. You start small: scavenging food, water, and shelter before rediscovering the basic methods of civilisation. From there, the goal is to grow a band of survivors into a continent-spanning empire across a landscape that is procedurally generated — meaning the map is built fresh each time you play.
Players choose one of several origin stories for their group. You might be abandoning a failed nuclear bunker, or playing as wayward zealots searching for a goddess in the dustlands. Technologies unlock dynamically based on what you find while exploring, rather than following a fixed research tree. The decisions stack up. Rationing resources, navigating the rise of new religions, responding to the mutated and the augmented — Paradox describes these as moral crises whose consequences echo through generations. Some games can feature immortal leaders from before the collapse, each with their own vision for who should rule, none willing to step aside quietly. As Paradox puts it, a second collapse is always one bad decision away.
The leak that preceded the official announcement came by way of Rock Paper Shotgun, which described Afterworld as a "post-apocalyptic wasteland tribe-battler" ahead of Gamescom (Rock Paper Shotgun). The official reveal confirmed the broader framing the next day.
For context, Paradox is a publisher and developer of strategy and management games across PC and consoles, with a publishing arm and seven studios across six countries. The company reports over five million monthly active users and a catalogue of more than 100 titles spanning almost 25 years (Paradox Interactive). Grand strategy — the genre Afterworld belongs to — is the company's signature format: games where you manage an entire civilisation or faction across long stretches of time, making military, economic, and political decisions on a sweeping scale.
No release date or price has been announced. The game's Steam page is live.
