Game of Thrones: War for Westeros Shows First Gameplay at Gamescom
Game of Thrones: War for Westeros has its first gameplay trailer, and it brings the houses of Westeros to life as a real-time strategy game — a genre where players command armies and resources in real time rather than taking turns.
Developer PlaySide Studios released the trailer on 25 August 2026, following its premiere at gamescom Opening Night Live in Cologne. The showcase, one of the industry's largest annual trade events, served as the stage for the first look at how the game actually plays.
War for Westeros lets players command four factions: House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen, and the White Walkers. The trailer confirmed eight named characters as playable, each with unique abilities — Robb Stark, Jon Snow, Ghost (Jon's direwolf), Grey Wind (Robb's direwolf), Jaime Lannister, Tywin Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen, and the Night King Eurogamer.
For fans of the series, that roster spans the political and the supernatural — from the Lannister war machine to the undead threat beyond the Wall, all playable on the same battlefield.
PlaySide, an Australian studio, first announced War for Westeros during Summer Game Fest in June 2025. At the time, the game was billed as a premium real-time strategy title for PC, with a launch planned for 2026. That window has since moved. The game was delayed, and its release is now set for early 2027 on Steam, Valve's PC gaming storefront Eurogamer.
A beta is planned ahead of launch, though PlaySide has not yet revealed dates or sign-up details.
The gameplay reveal trailer is available on YouTube, giving players their first direct look at combat, unit movement, and hero abilities in action YouTube. The official reveal trailer from August 2025 — a cinematic announcement rather than gameplay footage — can also be found on the developer's War for Westeros YouTube channel YouTube.
War for Westeros has a release window of early 2027 on PC via Steam. An official website at warforwesteros.com and an X account at @WarforWesteros are carrying updates as the beta details take shape.
