OpenAI has made ChatGPT's upgraded task-scheduling tool available to free accounts, expanding a feature set that had been restricted to paid tiers since June. The scheduled-tasks hub, along with expanded scheduling features, was previously limited to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise customers (Engadget).

Free users can now schedule either a one-time task or a recurring task capped at once per day. Instead of picking a precise clock time, users choose a time window such as morning, afternoon, or evening (OpenAI Help). Think of it like setting a smart-home routine that runs sometime in the morning rather than at exactly 7:15. It is a real constraint compared to what paid subscribers get, but it lowers the barrier enough for casual users to experiment with automated prompts.

Paid subscribers retain richer functionality. Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise customers can configure ChatGPT to trigger a prompt when events occur in Gmail, Slack, and GitHub (Engadget). This event-driven model works differently from time-based scheduling. Rather than asking ChatGPT to run something at 9 a.m., a user can have it fire when a specific GitHub issue is assigned or a Slack channel receives a keyword. The free tier does not include these integrations.

OpenAI also made it possible for users to share scheduled tasks with other users (Engadget). Shared tasks could let teams distribute recurring automation workloads without each member recreating the same prompt configuration, though OpenAI has not detailed permissions or scoping around shared tasks.

For use cases, OpenAI has suggested examples including travel alerts for upcoming trips and notifications about new movies and TV shows added to streaming services (Engadget). These are consumer-facing scenarios, and they sit a step removed from the developer-oriented event triggers available to paid accounts.

Separately, OpenAI is rolling out a Slack integration that enables users to chat with ChatGPT from inside Slack (OpenAI Help). This appears distinct from the event-trigger functionality for paid users, which uses Slack as a signal source. The in-Slack chat integration brings ChatGPT into the collaboration surface directly, rather than having it operate as a background agent reacting to Slack events.

The free-tier expansion comes roughly two months after the scheduled-tasks hub launched for paid customers in June. At that time, the hub centralized task management so users could view, edit, and manage their scheduled prompts in one place rather than scattered across individual chat sessions.

The constraints on the free tier tell their own story. One recurring task per day with flexible time windows is enough to show value but not enough to replace a dedicated automation tool. A user can set a morning digest or an evening summary. They cannot build a multi-step pipeline that fires on external events across services. The paid tier's event-driven triggers through Gmail, Slack, and GitHub come closer to that vision, and the gap between the two tiers is wide enough to function as a clear upgrade incentive.

The Slack chat integration places ChatGPT directly in a workflow surface where many knowledge workers already spend hours a day. The distinction between chatting with ChatGPT inside Slack and having ChatGPT react to Slack events is worth keeping straight: one is a conversational entry point, the other is an automation trigger. Both are rolling out, and together they suggest OpenAI is pushing ChatGPT from a destination users visit into a tool embedded in the tools they already use.

There is a familiar shape to this. Consumer AI products tend to start as standalone destinations, add scheduling and persistence, then progressively integrate into existing workflows through APIs and surface-level embeds. The free-tier expansion of scheduled tasks fits the second phase. The Slack integration fits the third. Neither is surprising as a product decision, but both move ChatGPT further from a chat box you open and closer to a background agent that operates on your behalf across surfaces.

For technology professionals, the practical question is whether ChatGPT's task scheduling is mature enough to rely on for anything beyond personal convenience. The once-per-day cap on free accounts and the absence of event-driven triggers in that tier limit its utility for operational workflows. Paid accounts with Gmail, Slack, and GitHub triggers get closer to something useful, but the breadth of integrations remains narrow. Teams evaluating ChatGPT for automated monitoring or alerting will likely find the current integration set insufficient for production-grade pipelines, though it may suffice for lightweight, ad hoc automation where a missed trigger is low-cost.

The ability to share tasks adds a collaborative dimension that could matter for small teams distributing recurring checks across members. Without documented permissions or audit controls, though, it is difficult to assess how shared tasks behave in environments with access restrictions or compliance requirements.

OpenAI has not stated whether event-driven triggers or additional integrations beyond Gmail, Slack, and GitHub will reach the free tier. The current structure keeps automation depth firmly on the paid side while giving free users enough functionality to understand what scheduled tasks can do.
