Golden Lion-winning artist Anne Imhof brings first Asia solo show to Hong Kong's Tai Kwun Contemporary
Anne Imhof, the German artist who won the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2017, will stage her first major solo exhibition in Asia this autumn at Tai Kwun Contemporary in Hong Kong. Anne Imhof: House of Swans opens to the public on 25 September 2026 and runs through 3 January 2027 at the JC Contemporary gallery space in the Tai Kwun heritage complex (Artnews; Tai Kwun Contemporary).
The centrepiece is a new live performance work, also titled House of Swans, featuring ballet performances staged inside the gallery itself (South China Morning Post; Tai Kwun Contemporary). The exhibition spans multiple media, including a newly commissioned piece, according to The Art Newspaper (The Art Newspaper).
Imhof is best known for performances that unfold over hours, with performers moving slowly through sculptural environments — part exhibition, part durational theatre. Her Venice Biennale installation, Faust, drew crowds who queued for hours and made her one of the most closely watched contemporary artists of her generation. House of Swans will be the first time Hong Kong audiences can see a large-scale Imhof work in person.
Tai Kwun Contemporary, the contemporary art arm of the Tai Kwun arts and heritage site in Central, is presenting the show. The venue occupies former police and magistracy buildings from Hong Kong's colonial era, repurposed into exhibition and performance spaces. Tickets cost HK$50 and can be bought online or on-site, according to Tai Kwun's programme page (Tai Kwun Contemporary).
For a general audience, the appeal is straightforward: this is a chance to see a live art performance inside a gallery rather than on a traditional stage, from an artist whose work has been shown at major institutions including Tate Modern in London and the Art Institute of Chicago. The ballet element places trained dancers directly into a visual-art setting, collapsing the usual distance between audience, performer and artwork.
The exhibition runs for just over three months. Tai Kwun Contemporary's programme has previously featured solo shows by artists including Pu Jianshuo and Choi Yan Chi, as well as group exhibitions of emerging practice from the region. Imhof's show brings an artist firmly established in the European and North American institutional circuit to a Hong Kong venue that has been building its international profile since opening in 2018.
