Patricia Clarkson Joins Tom Hanks and Callum Turner in Sony's Baseball Film 'The Comebacker'
Patricia Clarkson is set to join Tom Hanks and Callum Turner in Sony Pictures' film The Comebacker, directed by Marielle Heller, according to Deadline.
Heller adapted the screenplay from a Dave Eggers short story described as a love letter to baseball. The plot follows a young New York Mets pitcher — played by Turner — whose life is upended when he is struck by a batted ball. Hanks plays the pitching coach. Clarkson takes the role of the coach's wife.
The casting adds a performer who moves easily between prestige drama and broad-audience fare. Clarkson most recently wrapped Martin Scorsese's What Happens at Night, opposite Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. She is represented by CAA and Anonymous Content.
Production is set to shoot around Queens and Citi Field, the Mets' home ballpark. The film is being made in cooperation with Major League Baseball and the New York Mets — a detail that matters for anyone who follows how sports films get made, since league and team sign-off is what allows a production to use real logos, stadiums and uniforms rather than invented substitutes.
Behind the camera, the producer roster mixes established Hollywood and Heller's own shop. Gary Goetzman produces for Playtone, the company he runs with Hanks, alongside Heller and Leah Holzer for Defiant By Nature. Working Barn serves as executive producer. For Sony, The Comebacker fits a studio pattern of mid-budget, star-driven adult dramas designed to perform in theatres rather than on a streaming platform. No release date has been set. The film does not yet have a production start date on the public calendar.
