Hard Knocks Offseason Edition Returns to HBO Max — and This Time It's Covering a Whole NFL Division
HBO Max and NFL Films are bringing back the offseason edition of Hard Knocks, the documentary series that follows NFL teams behind the scenes during their quiet months. The new edition will film after the 2026 season and air the following year, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
This time, the scope is wider. Instead of trailing a single team, the revived offseason show will follow the staff of an entire NFL division — the four clubs that compete against each other all season, from general managers to scouts to coaches. That mirrors the approach NFL Films already uses for its in-season edition, which tracks every team in one division through the regular season. The specific division has not yet been chosen.
The offseason format debuted in 2024 with the New York Giants, chronicling the franchise as it prepared for its 100th season. Cameras captured front-office deliberations through free agency, the NFL Draft, and the scouting combine — the league's annual talent evaluation event where college players are tested and measured. One of the most talked-about moments was footage of the Giants dealing with running back Saquon Barkley's departure to the Philadelphia Eagles.
NFL Films senior executive Ross Ketover announced the return, telling The Hollywood Reporter that fans are increasingly drawn to how NFL rosters are built and the people who build them. Executive producer Ken Rodgers added that the Giants offseason edition drew particular praise from viewers working in white-collar corporate roles — people who recognised the rhythms of meetings, negotiations, and difficult personnel decisions.
The Hard Knocks machine is running on multiple tracks. The training camp edition featuring the Seattle Seahawks is currently airing on HBO and HBO Max. The New England Patriots are lined up for the training camp edition next year, in the summer of 2027. The Buffalo Bills were featured in the 2025 training camp edition, and the NFC East — the Giants' own division — was showcased in the 2025 in-season edition.
What makes the offseason format distinct is its focus on decisions rather than games. The training camp and in-season editions build toward football being played. The offseason show is about the chess that happens before anyone takes a snap: who gets signed, who gets cut, who gets drafted, and how the people inside the building talk each other through it.
For fans, a division-wide offseason edition means four times the roster drama — four front offices, four draft war rooms, four sets of coaches planning for the same opponents. Which division gets the call is still undecided, but the format itself is set: more teams, more access, more of the period when the NFL's most consequential work happens off the field.
