Xbox Shows 18 Minutes of Fable Gameplay at Gamescom, Detailing Combat, City Life and Quests

Xbox has released an extended 18-minute gameplay demonstration of Fable during Gamescom, offering the deepest look yet at how the rebooted open-world action-RPG actually plays. The video is narrated by Playground Games art director Conar Cross, who walks viewers through the capital city of Bowerstone, a quest, and the game's combat system. VGC
The demonstration follows the hero through Bowerstone's streets and into a player-owned house, where a spouse and child live. Cross reveals that 400 fully voiced NPCs — non-player characters, the people populating the game world — reside in Bowerstone alone, each with their own home, hobbies, traits and personality. Every one of them can be spoken to and interacted with. Playground Games uses the term "Living Population" to describe the more than 1,000 NPCs across the world of Albion, the fictional setting for the series. Xbox Wire
The walkthrough also covers a quest titled "The Last of the Greats," featuring a character named Humphry the Golden. Combat gets its most detailed showing to date. Fable reintroduces the Strength, Skill and Will system from the original games in a new form, covering melee, ranged and magic attacks. Spells revealed include Fireball, Lightning, Blade, Lift, Rush, Push and Befowl. Xbox Wire
The Gamescom walkthrough accompanied a first-ever hands-on demo for press and creators, with Xbox Wire publishing a dedicated combat breakdown on August 26, 2026.
Fable is described as a "new beginning" for the Xbox series, which began on the original Xbox in 2004. The reboot received its first in-depth look at Microsoft's Developer_Direct presentation on January 22, 2026. A story trailer debuted during the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7, 2026, revealing gameplay, characters beyond the Hero and a cast that includes Hayley Atwell. Xbox later uploaded an extended 30-minute uncut gameplay video on June 10, 2026, covering social-simulation elements and combat. Xbox Wire
The game is scheduled to launch on February 23, 2027. Fable was previously delayed to 2027 over concerns about the release of GTA 6, according to a report citing people familiar with the plans. VGC
For fans of the series, the Gamescom demonstration fills in the picture considerably. Earlier glimpses focused on tone and atmosphere. This one shows the mechanical bones: how quests are structured, how the city feels lived-in, and how the three-pillar combat system works in practice. The 400 voiced NPCs in a single city, each with a daily routine and personality, point to a world designed to react to the player rather than simply house them.
Whether that ambition holds across the full game is a question for February 2027. What Gamescom confirms is that Playground Games, a studio best known for the Forza Horizon racing series, is building something with real scope — and now has the footage to prove it.
