Fable's main story will take roughly 15 to 20 hours to finish, according to Xbox and developer Playground Games. Associate game director Will Kennedy shared the figure during a group Q&A at Gamescom 2026, reported by Polygon and confirmed by Eurogamer.

Kennedy added that side quests and open-world exploration offer a similar amount of content on top of the critical path, roughly doubling the playtime for players who wander off the main road. Fellow associate game director Craig Littler went further, telling journalists that players could play the game "forever" thanks to its life systems — the simulation rules governing how the world's inhabitants behave and react when the player is not watching.

The Fable reboot is the first entry in the series to make its fantasy world of Albion fully open-world, a detail revealed at the Xbox Developer Direct in January 2026. That world features over 1,000 living NPCs — non-player characters, the people and creatures populating a game world — whose daily lives players can meddle with, from marriage to property to petty revenge, according to GamesRadar.

Fable is a reboot of the long-running Xbox fantasy franchise, known for its dark humour, moral choices, and a world that reacts to how players conduct themselves. The new entry is being developed by Playground Games, the studio behind the Forza Horizon racing series, and marks the franchise's first new instalment in over a decade. An IGN hands-on preview at Gamescom 2026 found "surprising depth" in the game's spell-slinging combat, per IGN.

The game launches on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X on 27 February 2027. The PlayStation release is notable: Fable has historically been an Xbox franchise, and its expansion to a competing console reflects Microsoft's broader strategy of bringing its first-party titles to rival platforms.

For players weighing the value of the experience, the numbers sketch a clear picture. Fifteen to twenty hours for the main quest puts Fable in line with other major action-RPGs rather than sprawling epics. But with matching side content, over 1,000 simulated characters, and life systems designed to keep the world ticking indefinitely, the total could stretch well beyond that figure for anyone who lingers in Albion.
