Samsung has raised the ceiling on gaming monitor refresh rates, announcing an Odyssey G6 G60H that hits 1,100Hz at 1080p — surpassing the 1,040Hz figure the company cited at CES 2026 earlier this year. The G60H uses an IPS panel (the most common LCD technology, known for good color accuracy and viewing angles) with a 1ms response time. At its native 1440p resolution, the refresh rate settles at 600Hz. Samsung has not specified pricing or a firm launch date but says the G6 will be globally available by the end of 2026. (The Verge)

The G6 was announced as part of a broader Odyssey lineup refresh that includes new OLED models across three tiers: the OLED G9, OLED G8, and OLED G7.

The new Odyssey OLED G9 is a 49-inch DQHD display (roughly twice the width of a standard 1080p image, at 5120 x 1440) that Samsung calls the "world's first 49-inch DQHD gaming monitor with a 360Hz refresh rate." The previous OLED G9 topped out at 240Hz. The new model runs at 360Hz in its native resolution and can switch to a 720Hz dual HD mode at 2560 x 720. It carries a 0.03ms response time and peak brightness of up to 1,300 nits — a measure of how bright the screen can get, relevant for HDR content.

The 32-inch Odyssey OLED G8 offers its own set of resolution-to-refresh-rate tradeoffs: UHD (3840 x 2160) at 360Hz, QHD at 520Hz, and FHD at 680Hz. Samsung positions the Odyssey OLED G7 as the "world's first 42-inch 16:9 curved OLED gaming monitor," with a 4K panel, 165Hz refresh rate, and 1000R curvature (meaning it curves at a radius of 1,000 millimeters, a fairly tight wrap). The G7 replaces a 32-inch predecessor, moving up in size while keeping the curved-OLED format.

Samsung has not announced prices or specific launch dates for any model in the 2027 Odyssey lineup, stating only that availability will vary by market.

The pattern across the lineup is consistent: each monitor pairs a high native resolution with a more modest refresh rate, then offers a lower-resolution mode that unlocks substantially higher frame rates. The G6's jump from 600Hz at 1440p to 1,100Hz at 1080p is the most aggressive example. The OLED G9 moves from 360Hz at DQHD to 720Hz at dual HD. The OLED G8 spans 360Hz at UHD up to 680Hz at FHD.

These dual-mode capabilities are not new in principle; Samsung and other manufacturers have offered resolution-and-refresh switching for several generations. What is new is the magnitude of the numbers. A 1,100Hz refresh rate sits well beyond what current display cables and graphics cards can fully drive at sustained frame rates in real-world gaming. The more practical application is competitive esports, where players routinely lower in-game resolution and visual settings to maximize frame rates and minimize input latency — the delay between clicking and seeing the result on screen. Whether refresh rates above 360Hz provide a meaningful competitive advantage is debated, but high refresh is part of the esports toolkit.

The OLED panels' brightness and response-time figures map more directly to perceptible improvements in image quality. A 0.03ms response time on the OLED G9 is fast enough that the pixels essentially change color within the time a single frame is on screen, even at 360Hz. And 1,300 nits of peak brightness puts the G9 in territory that can produce meaningful specular highlights — the bright glints and reflections that make HDR scenes feel more realistic, particularly on a display that large.

The omission of pricing is notable but not unusual for an initial lineup announcement. Samsung's Odyssey monitors have historically occupied the premium segment of the gaming display market, and the feature sets here — particularly the OLED G9's combination of size, brightness, and refresh rate — are consistent with that positioning.

The broader context here is that the numbers tell a story of two different trajectories. On the LCD side, Samsung is pushing refresh rates to levels that test the limits of what the rest of the system can sustain, from GPU output to cable bandwidth to how fast the panel's pixels can physically switch. On the OLED side, the advances are more balanced across the metrics that matter for image quality: brightness, response time, and resolution, with refresh rate improvements that are meaningful but not extreme. The OLED G7's 165Hz at 4K on a 42-inch curved panel targets a different buyer than the G6's 1,100Hz at 1080p, and the lineup seems designed to cover both ends of that spectrum.

How much of this translates into shipping product at the announced specifications, and at what price points, will determine whether these are genuine advances in the gaming monitor market or headline numbers optimized for announcement-cycle attention. The end-of-2026 availability window for the G6 gives Samsung roughly four months to deliver.
