The Witcher 3 Remastered Ships With Community-Made Mods — Including the Modder Who Already Did This Once

When The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered launches on September 29, 2026, some of its visual upgrades will have started life as fan-made modifications. CD Projekt Red has incorporated community-created mods into the official remaster, working directly with the people who built them.
The most prominent collaborator is HalkHogan, creator of the Witcher 3 HD Reworked Project NextGen Edition — a mod that replaces the game's original textures with higher-resolution versions. Writing on the Nexus Mods forum (a long-standing site where players share their own modifications for games), HalkHogan confirmed he cooperated with CD Projekt Red on the remaster. His work will be officially available in the game on PC and consoles, and he told users that his standalone mod would "no longer be needed" once the remaster arrives.
This is not the first time. HalkHogan's original HD Reworked Project, now called the OldGen Edition, was previously incorporated into The Witcher 3's next-gen update — a free upgrade released for newer hardware that already drew on community work. The remastered edition extends that arrangement further.
CD Projekt Red officially announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered through its press centre on August 25, confirming a September 29 launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The remaster will also arrive on Battle.net, Blizzard's PC game storefront, marking the first time a Witcher game has appeared on that platform. The company also revealed extended gameplay footage and a new DLC titled "Songs of the Past." Nintendo Switch 2 owners with a physical copy of the original game can claim a free upgrade to the remastered version at launch.
For fans, the modding detail carries a particular satisfaction. The Witcher 3 has one of the most active modding communities in modern games — players have spent years improving its textures, lighting, and interface. Seeing that volunteer labour formally credited and folded into an official release is not standard industry practice. Most publishers either tolerate mods from a distance or shut them down.
The timing also reaches beyond the remaster itself. Geralt of Rivia, the series' lead character, makes his debut in Diablo 4 — Blizzard's action role-playing game — as the Witcher 3 remaster launches on Battle.net. That crossover, tying a CD Projekt Red character to a rival publisher's platform, gives both releases a shared promotional moment.
HalkHogan did not disclose financial terms of his arrangement with CD Projekt Red. Other modders involved in the project have not been publicly named. The remaster itself is a separate release from the 2015 original, which has sold over 50 million copies across all platforms and remains one of the best-selling role-playing games ever made.
The September 29 launch covers all announced platforms simultaneously. Whether the incorporated mods represent the full extent of community content in the remaster, or additional collaborations surface before release, has not been confirmed.
