Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem Play a Married Couple for the First Time in Florian Zeller's 'Bunker'
Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem, partners for nearly two decades and Oscar winners both, have never played a married couple on screen together — until now. Their first pairing as husband and wife comes in Bunker, a psychological thriller written and directed by French film-maker Florian Zeller, which Sony Pictures Classics has acquired for North America (Variety).
Zeller conceived the idea of casting the real-life couple before he wrote a single page of the story. Speaking publicly about the film for the first time, in an interview at Paris' Royal Monceau hotel, he cited Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut — which cast Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman during their marriage — as the inspiration for bringing Cruz and Bardem together on screen (Variety).
Bunker is Zeller's first solo screenplay and the first film he has produced, through his Mediawan-owned company Blue Morning Pictures with producer Federica Sainte-Rose (Variety). His previous features were co-written with Christopher Hampton. The Father (2020) won two Oscars, for Anthony Hopkins as best actor and for Zeller and Hampton's adapted screenplay; the follow-up, The Son, received a cooler reception at the Venice Film Festival (Variety).
The film follows an architect who accepts a morally ambiguous project: building a survivalist bunker for a couple whose marriage is unravelling (Variety). Bardem described it as "a marriage story" in a separate interview earlier this year (Variety). The couple on screen have been married for 17 years (IMDb).
The cast extends well beyond its two leads. Paul Dano joined the production last December, alongside Stephen Graham, with additional roles still being filled (Variety). Graham's involvement was confirmed in May 2025 (Variety). Cruz also stars in Olivia Wilde's upcoming film The Invite and has a cameo in La Bola Negra (Variety).
Bunker has been listed among potential titles for this year's Venice Film Festival, described as an elevated thriller (Variety). No release date has been set.
What makes the casting resonate is simple: the audience knows the actors' real history together. Kubrick understood the same dynamic with Cruise and Kidman. When a couple's off-screen life bleeds into the fiction, every scene carries a charge the script alone cannot supply — and Zeller, who built the entire project around that idea, is betting that it holds.
