Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem Bring Venice to Its Feet: 15.5-Minute Ovation for 'Bunker'
Penélope Cruz sobbed and kissed her husband Javier Bardem as their film Bunker received a 15.5-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival on Tuesday, 8 September 2026 — the most enthusiastic reception of the festival so far, according to Variety.
As the applause passed the ten-minute mark, Cruz mouthed "Thank you!" to fans and shook the hand of an admirer in the crowd. Before the premiere, she had walked the carpet in a red dress, collecting flowers and posing for selfies. Director Florian Zeller instructed the cast — including Patrick Schwarzenegger and Paul Dano — to individually step forward to receive applause during the ovation.
The 15.5 minutes fell just short of the 17-minute standing ovation that greeted Pedro Almodóvar's The Room Next Door at Venice in 2024. Festival ovations are a Venice ritual: long, loud, and read by industry attendees as a rough barometer of a film's awards potential.
Bunker stars Bardem and Cruz as Miguel and Sofia, a married couple in a London home they share with their children. Miguel, an architect, agrees to build a survivalist bunker for Andrew, a tech billionaire played by Paul Dano — a decision that opens a rift in his 17-year marriage. Sofia begins questioning whether she and her husband share the same values, and starts working with an American novelist, Jeremy Gray, played by Schwarzenegger. The cast also includes Stephen Graham, and the official Biennale programme lists a running time of 126 minutes (La Biennale di Venezia).
Zeller, the French writer-director behind The Father — which won two Oscars, for Anthony Hopkins's lead performance and for best adapted screenplay shared with Christopher Hampton — has said that Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut was a key inspiration. He cast the real-life couple Bardem and Cruz as husband and wife to blur the line between fiction and reality, much as Kubrick cast the then-married Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in that film.
Sony Pictures Classics has acquired North American and other territorial rights to Bunker and is planning an awards-qualifying run at the end of 2026, followed by an early 2027 US theatrical release. The same distributor campaigned for The Father, which earned six Oscar nominations including best picture. FilmNation Entertainment is handling international sales.
The film is produced by Federica Sainte-Rose and Zeller through Blue Morning Pictures, a banner under the Mediawan group, alongside Fernando Bovaira and Simon de Santiago of MOD Producciones. It was selected for the main competition — Venezia 83 — at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, where 21 feature-length films compete for the Golden Lion (La Biennale di Venezia).
A follow-up press screening is scheduled for 9 September at 09:00 at the PalaBiennale. Cruz and Bardem also addressed their willingness to speak out about politics at the film's press conference (Variety).
Bunker ranks among the biggest international titles on the fall festival circuit this year — a 126-minute dramatic thriller that the Biennale's own description frames as a study of a couple facing emotional and moral strain as the anxieties of an uncertain world mount.
