Netflix Orders Maternity-Ward Docuseries 'Born in the USA' from Wheelhouse
Netflix has greenlit a maternity-ward docuseries with the working title Born in the USA, putting cameras inside a busy labour ward to capture births in real time. Production company Wheelhouse is behind the project, which was developed over several years as producers secured access to the hospital ward (Deadline).
The series logline describes a "high-stakes hidden world of birth" where doctors and nurses guide families through labour as it happens. No air date has been set. Episode counts and the specific hospital involved have not been disclosed.
Kate Collier, Will Nothacker and Courtney White serve as executive producers. All three are part of Wheelhouse, which has become a steady supplier of unscripted series to Netflix — the company's slate for the platform includes Calabasas Confidential, King of Collectibles: The Goldin Touch, Buying Beverly Hills and America's Sweethearts: The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. That last title was renewed for a fourth season, per Deadline.
The format will feel familiar to British viewers. Born in the USA is comparable to One Born Every Minute, the Channel 4 series that fixed cameras inside maternity wards across Southampton, Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester. That show ran for eleven seasons before ending in 2018. A U.S. adaptation aired on Lifetime in 2011, and the original UK format is set to return for a reboot later this year.
Netflix has been stacking up unscripted orders alongside this one. The platform recently commissioned The Leftovers from SallyAnn Salsano's 495 Productions — the company behind Jersey Shore — as well as Arizona Hot, an ensemble reality series from Brightspot Content (Deadline).
For viewers, Born in the USA sits in a tradition of fly-on-the-wall hospital television that stretches back decades. The appeal is straightforward: real people, real stakes, no script. A maternity ward packed with fixed cameras offers drama that no writers' room needs to manufacture — every shift brings new families, new complications and new arrivals.
