Google announced new trip-planning and booking capabilities for Search AI Mode on August 27, 2026, extending the conversational search experience into end-to-end travel workflows including flight price tracking, hotel discovery and booking, and points-and-miles cost display (TechCrunch).

The flight features let users ask AI Mode to surface flight options, pulling the latest prices from more than 300 airlines and travel sites. Users can request ongoing price tracking for a given destination and dates; when fares move, Google sends an email alert. When ready to commit, users can build their flight itinerary directly within AI Mode rather than jumping to a separate booking flow. Flight price tracking is available in more than 180 countries (TechCrunch).

On the hotel side, AI Mode supports conversational discovery: users describe what they need, and the system returns hotel options alongside reviews and what Google describes as key factors for comparison. To complete a booking, users select a "Continue on Google" option that appears alongside Google's integrated partners. Payment runs through Google Pay, but the hotel or booking platform itself handles fulfillment and customer service. Hotel booking began rolling out in the U.S. in English, with expansion to additional markets planned over the coming weeks (TechCrunch).

The partner roster for hotel booking is broad: Booking.com, Choice Hotels International, Expedia, Hilton, Hotels.com, IHG Hotels & Resorts, Marriott International, Priceline, Trip.com, and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts. That list spans OTAs (online travel agencies, which aggregate and resell hotel inventory) and major hotel chains, which matters for inventory coverage and for how Google positions itself relative to the booking platforms it depends on (TechCrunch).

AI Mode can also display the cost of flights and hotels in points or miles. A user can query, for instance, whether AA miles can be used for a specific route and dates, and AI Mode returns the relevant points-based pricing. This update is available globally, unlike the hotel booking flow, which is still in a phased U.S. rollout (TechCrunch).

These features sit atop a steadily expanding travel tool set within Google's ecosystem. Google Flights already let users track prices by flight, route, and dates (Google Support). In August 2025, Google introduced "Flight Deals," an AI-powered flight search tool, alongside a filter to exclude basic economy results on Google Flights (Google Blog). In April 2026, Google added price-drop alerts for individual hotel properties, expanding on a tool that had previously tracked prices only at the city level (Skift). And Google's broader "A new era for AI Search" announcement from May 2026 framed the company's direction as bringing advanced model capabilities to Search, enabling users to invoke agents simply by asking a question (Google Blog).

The architecture here is worth noting. AI Mode is not building a proprietary booking engine. It aggregates inventory from partners, surfaces it in a conversational interface, and then hands off to those partners for the actual transaction. Google processes payment through Google Pay but deliberately stays out of fulfillment and customer service. That division of labor is consistent with how Google has historically operated in travel: it owns the discovery and comparison layer and monetizes the traffic, while third parties handle the operational complexity of running a booking business.

The European Union has scrutinized this positioning before. In July 2021, the EU gave Google two months to improve how it presents search results for flights and hotels and to explain how it ranks those results (Reuters). The concern was whether Google's own travel tools received preferential treatment in search results relative to competitors. As AI Mode moves from surfacing information to actively facilitating bookings within a conversational interface, the line between Google-as-search-engine and Google-as-travel-platform becomes harder to draw. Whether regulators revisit that distinction will depend in part on how much of the transaction Google absorbs versus delegates to partners.

Looking at what this means in practice, the points-and-miles display is the quiet standout. Loyalty program redemption has long been a fragmented, frustrating experience across airline and hotel portals. If AI Mode can normalize those queries into a single conversational interface, that alone could shift where frequent travelers start their planning. The flight price tracking and hotel booking features are more evolutionary, bringing capabilities that already existed in Google Flights and Google Hotels into the AI Mode surface. The differentiator is the interaction model: conversational multi-turn refinement replaces tab-hopping and filter-stacking.

Whether users trust an AI assistant enough to let it shape an itinerary and initiate a booking is a separate question from whether the features technically work. Google's partner breadth and its decision to keep fulfillment with established booking platforms are pragmatic choices that reduce friction and risk. The phased rollout, starting in a single language and market, suggests Google is watching adoption signals before scaling.

The competitive pressure is real. AI-native travel planning from startups and from other large platforms is converging on the same UX pattern: natural language in, structured options out. Google's advantage remains its inventory relationships and its distribution via Search. The risk is that conversational interfaces reduce the number of results pages users actually see, which has implications for ad inventory and for the partner referral economics that underpin Google's travel business. That tension will play out over the coming quarters as these features reach wider availability.
