Neon Unveils the Trailer for 'Fjord,' Cristian Mungiu's Palme d'OR Winner, Ahead of October 9 Release
Neon has debuted the official trailer for Fjord, Cristian Mungiu's Palme d'Or–winning film, ahead of its U.S. theatrical release on October 9 (Deadline).
The film stars Renate Reinsve as a Norwegian woman who relocates with her Romanian husband, played by Sebastian Stan, and their five children to a remote coastal town. Mungiu, the Romanian film-maker whose 2007 feature 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days won the Palme d'Or at Cannes, returned to the top prize at this year's festival with Fjord — a culture-war drama set in Norway (NPR).
The acquisition by Neon was a Cannes story in its own right. The distributor bought rights for the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand on the eve of the film's world premiere (Deadline). When Fjord took the Palme d'Or, it marked Neon's seventh consecutive year winning the festival's top award — an unbroken streak that has become one of the most striking run of deals in the independent distribution landscape.
The October 9 release is no accident of scheduling. Neon set the date in June to position Mungiu's film squarely for awards season, the annual corridor between autumn releases and the winter industry-voting cycle (Screen Daily; Variety). An early October berth gives a film roughly three months of theatrical runway before precursor nominations begin landing in December — time to build word of mouth among both general audiences and the guilds and critics' groups whose early nods shape the Oscar race.
Reinsve, best known internationally for her award-winning turn in Joachim Trier's The Worst Person in the World, takes a leading role here opposite Stan, the Marvel Cinematic Universe veteran whose recent work has leaned increasingly toward dramatic and independent material. The pairing places a Norwegian art-house star alongside a Hollywood name with broad recognition — a casting configuration that independent distributors value for bridging festival prestige and theatrical reach.
Mungiu, a leading figure of the Romanian New Wave, builds Fjord as a family drama layered with cultural friction. The remote Norwegian setting and the cross-national marriage at its centre place the personal and the political on the same dinner table.
Neon's own film page confirms the October 9 date and credits Mungiu as director, with Stan and Reinsve listed as stars (Neon). The trailer, now public, offers the first wide look at what Cannes jurors chose above every other film in competition last May.
