Cristian Mungiu's 'Fjord' Goes From Cannes Palme d'Or to Telluride, Chasing Oscars
Cristian Mungiu's "Fjord," winner of the Palme d'Or at the 79th Cannes Film Festival in May, made its North American festival stop at Telluride over the Labour Day weekend — the Romanian director's first visit to the Colorado mountain festival in a decade, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The film stars Oscar nominees Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve as the Gheorghius, a devout Romanian couple who resettle in Norway, where their religiosity and parenting come under skeptical scrutiny from their new progressive government. It is a 146-minute drama produced in Romania and France, listed on the official Cannes site as a 2026 In Competition feature. Mungiu both wrote and directed, per his Festival de Cannes profile.
This is Mungiu's second Palme d'Or. His first came in 2007 for "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days," the harrowing Romanian drama that cemented his international reputation. Between 2007 and 2016 he made three films, all of which collected prizes at Cannes. His 2016 entry "Graduation" shared the Best Director award. He also made "R.M.N.," a film that reached few screens, in the years between his two Telluride appearances.
"Fjord" does not take a side. It dissects polarization by presenting the collision of two value systems — conservative faith and progressive state authority — without moralizing. That stance turned the film into a social-media lightning rod even before it screened, as Mungiu told The Hollywood Reporter. "People were polarized to an extreme," he said, and began fighting about the film online before watching it. He noted that in the last 10 to 20 years it has become unusual, almost sinful, to make a film that presents two opinions of a complex situation and lets the audience wrestle with both.
Tilda Swinton presented the Palme d'Or to Mungiu at the closing ceremony on 23 May 2026, as France 24 and Reuters reported. Park Chan-wook chaired the jury; Demi Moore served as a juror. The Grand Prix went to Andreï Zviaguintsev's "Minotaure," presented by Zoe Saldaña.
Neon is backing "Fjord" for a fall awards run. The distributor has form: it has guided previous Cannes winners to Oscar success. Romania has already selected the film as its entry for the international feature film category at the Academy Awards.
"Fjord" is scheduled for a theatrical release on 19 August 2026, per the Cannes festival listing. With its Telluride appearance now behind it, the film enters the autumn corridor where festival buzz turns into awards traction.
