Rapsody Returns With 'God Gotta Afro & Gold Hoops,' an Album Born From a Journey Through Africa

Rapsody's fifth studio album, God Gotta Afro & Gold Hoops, arrived on streaming platforms on 21 August, released through We Each Other and Roc Nation. The 16-track record is the Grammy-winning rapper's first full-length project since her last studio outing, and it carries the imprint of a continent she first visited in 2013 Billboard.

The album's foundation was laid during a 2025 trip to Africa, with stops in Ghana and Johannesburg. Rapsody was accompanied by Denaun Porter, her production collaborator of more than a decade. Porter's beats shaped the sessions that followed, and the trip gave the record its emotional and sonic coordinates Billboard.

The first song to emerge was 'Free Your Mind,' recorded to the initial batch of beats Porter built for the project. The last was 'You,' a DJ Whoo Kid-assisted track that closed out the sessions. Between those two bookends sit 14 more tracks, with guest appearances noted across the album Billboard; Revolt.

The release lands during a moment of renewed attention for rap at the top of the charts. Drake's 'Janice STFU' recently ended a year-long drought for rap songs at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 — the chart that tracks the most-consumed songs in the United States across streaming, radio and sales Billboard.

For Rapsody, the Africa trip was not a first encounter but a return. She first visited South Africa in 2013, and the 2025 journey through Ghana and Johannesburg deepened a connection that had already been more than a decade in the making. Porter's presence on the road meant the album's creative engine was running before the flights home Billboard.
